Positively West 4th St
Between the desert hills and the Truckee River is a little riverfront community on Reno’s west side, informally known as West 4th Street. There’s a lot to enjoy in this neighborhood, according to Dickson Realty, Inc. realtor Kristen Gil. “It’s close to the Truckee River, which feeds into Lake Tahoe. It’s up on the hill and close to the river and homes that are on the river. It’s close to several restaurants and wine bars. It has great freeway access and there’s a lot of hiking trails nearby,” Gil says. From the aqueducts carrying fresh water into the city to its many pedestrian-friendly pathways, it’s easy to see how this little corner of Reno is in touch with nature and has so much to explore.
Mountain magic
There’s so much flora and fauna to discover at West 4th. Cheerful yellow prairie sunflowers can be found throughout the neighborhood. Mayberry Park is a place for many outdoorsy activities, including river tubing, picnicking and hiking. Its paved trails are friendly to hikers, dogwalkers and rollerbladers. Fishing is also a very popular pastime in West 4th Street. The Truckee River is one of the most heavily fished rivers in the state. Nearby Dorostkar Park is also a popular spot for fishing and hiking in the area. The Tom Cooke Trail is a 3.9-mile loop trail that begins flat before inclining, so the terrain is friendly to hiking newbies and the results yield panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Riverside residences
Many homes in West 4th have distinctly eclectic features, such as pillared entrances and false shutters. Some residences have Spanish- Mediterranean style detailing down to their tiled roofs, lending them a sense of regional charm. Others lean more towards the Craftsman style and rows of homes can be found in identical fashions. Because many of these homes sit parallel to the Truckee River, plant life in front yards is exposed to cooler temperatures. The streets in these residential areas run wide, allowing for pedestrians to pass through with ease. Homes tend to cost around $575,000 and go as high as $830,000.
Restaurants in Reno
Johnny’s Ristorante is one of Reno’s oldest and most famous restaurants, serving Italian cuisine in an elegant atmosphere. The Whispering Vine, self-described as Reno’s premier wine and spirits purveyor for over 25 years, serves small plates and fine wines. Coffeebar McCarran combines Italian coffee culture with modern sensibilities. Its décor also features artwork from past Burning Man, a famous Nevada-based festival of artistic expression and community. Flowing Tide Pub is a high-end sports bar that offers a diverse menu and happy hours multiple times a week. The Cake Slice rotates out their cake flavors weekly, always providing both slices and whole cakes for every occasion.
After school clubs
Students may attend schools in the Washoe County School District. Verdi Elementary received a B-plus grade from Niche while BD Billinghurst Middle earned a B-plus. Reno High School earned an A-grade and has several different extracurriculars for students, including heritage, language and athletic clubs.
Bridges and buses
This neighborhood is quite walkable. With low traffic and numerous pedestrian bridges, paved trails and bike-friendly roads, residents have tons of ways to get around while getting active. Its namesake, West 4th St runs directly through the center of the neighborhood and intersects with Interstate 80, a major thruway that connects from coast to coast. State Routes 647 and 659 are also within reach. Public transportation is also available for residents of West 4th Street, served by the RTC bus transit authority.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
