Established suburbs between Hull Street Road and Broad Rock Boulevard
Hidden under mature trees between sparse commercial areas along Hull Street Road and Broad Rock Boulevard, South Garden is a neighborhood in the southside of Richmond seeing recent improvement in their community spaces. The Broad Rock Branch of the Richmond Public Library stands next door to the updated athletic fields at Broad Rock Sports Complex, becoming destinations in an area not especially rich with community hubs. “We host homework help, bilingual story times and adult English classes,” says Summer Michau, Broad Rock Branch’s children’s librarian. “We've been really happy to see more of the community coming to the library over the past few years, and even recently expanded our hours.” Within miles of downtown Richmond and Chippenham Parkway, South Garden attracts folks wanting commuter access to the broader region away from the noise.
The quiet residential neighborhood of South Garden sits just 5 miles from the James River.

Small homes on grassy blocks
Dense, grassy suburban streets shaded by mature trees make up most of South Garden, sporting a mix of small single-family options like Cape Cods and ranch-style homes built from the 1930s through 1960s. Older homes with under 1,500 square feet of living space sell for $150,000 to $290,000 depending on interior updates, while the occasional bilevel or new construction home with closer to 2,000 square feet of space sells for $240,000 to $390,000. Many homes are advertised as either investment opportunities or as starter homes in need of some rehab, and as of 2024, about 40% of South Garden residents rent rather than own. Residents use their front and back yards differently across the neighborhood, with some lots boasting more tree coverage, neat landscaping and gardens or chain-link fences around the perimeter.
