Historic living 5 miles from Downtown Richmond
Windsor Farms embodies classic Virginia living, and residents strive to keep it that way. The neighborhood was developed to look like an English Village in the 1920s when Richmond saw a residential boom. It was a community for those wanting proximity to the city and its amenities without the accompanying hubbub. Today, strict guidelines govern what can and cannot be done to homes, preserving the neighborhood's heritage and architectural integrity. Walking through Windsor Farms, one can picture hounds running through during an old fox hunt or the shining lights of a Prohibition-era party. The neighborhood’s streets curve into a circular pattern around Dover Road, and the lack of cut-throughs or through roads ensures there isn’t unnecessary traffic. Grace Baptist Church, a brick building with white columns and a large steeple, sits in the center of the neighborhood. It overlooks an open green field surrounded by brick sidewalks that extend throughout the neighborhood. Next door is The Tuckahoe Woman’s Club, a Tudor Revival building that hosts numerous community events throughout the year. In the spring, cherry blossoms line Windsor Way and magnolia and oak trees dot the landscape. “Windsor Farms is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Richmond,” says Karen Stephens, Associate Broker with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., who grew up in the neighborhood. “Every home is different, and people are always outside – kids playing with their friends or older people talking to each other. People really look out for each other.”

Windsor Farms history
John C. Williams Jr. built Windsor Farms in the 1920s when he inherited a farm known as Windsor. He continued purchasing adjacent plots until he reached 440 acres. With the help of top Richmond builders of the day, he developed the neighborhood to look like an English Village, in the garden suburb style. Windsor Farms looks pastoral, meant to mimic country life and contrast nearby Richmond. Among its many architecturally significant properties, two of the neighborhood’s first homes, Agecroft Hall and Virginia House, have been transformed from private residences into museums. Both 16th-century English manor houses were dismantled into labeled parts and shipped across the Atlantic in the 1920s. When they arrived in Richmond, they were reassembled on lots where they still stand. Agecroft Hall, a Tudor with extensive half-timbering, hosts Richmond’s annual Shakespeare Festival. “The tulips at Agecroft are phenomenal,” Stephens says. “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.”

Classic homes mimicking an English village
Homes in Windsor Farms are built in classical styles, and the neighborhood has covenants and restrictions governing what can or cannot be done to properties. An Architectural Review Committee (ARC) overlooks the neighborhood, approving any renovations to the exterior of homes. “Every house In Windsor Farms is custom built and unique,” Stephens explains. “The houses aren’t modern in style, but they’ve been updated inside. For example, many houses at this price point would have garages, but many people have turned them into dens, playrooms or rec rooms.” Colonial Revival, Georgian, Williamsburg Revival, Cape Cod, Tudor Revival and ranch-style properties dot Windsor Farms’s tree-lined streets. The back of the neighborhood borders the James River, and these homes get a birds-eye view of the water in pocket vistas. Potential buyers can find a home here for between $700,000 and $4.5 million, with a median price of around $1.7 million.

The Windsor Farms Garden Club
The Windsor Farms Garden Club meets from September to November and from January to April. The Garden Club has two major events throughout the year – a December holiday party and a May luncheon, with awards and the induction of new officers. The Club supports The Virginia Home, a private facility aiding adult Virginians with physical disabilities and plans community events throughout the year, like the neighborhood Easter egg hunt.
Playdates at Munford Playground and neighborhood greenspace
Windsor Farms’s original developers reserved 11 symmetrical greenspaces throughout the neighborhood, totaling 20 acres, as social gathering spaces. Today, although homes have been built on much of that land, several undeveloped pockets, as well as the central lawn, remain. Kids head to Mary Munford Elementary School’s playground, just across Cary Street Road, for an afternoon climbing large wooden play structures and swinging on swings. This large, well-maintained park, which also features soccer fields, basketball courts and tennis courts, is open to the public when school is not in session.

Residents can dine at Richmond favorites like Can Can Brasserie, serving French cuisine, or grab a quick burger at Carytown Burgers & Fries. For a late night out, locals head to The Jasper and New York Deli, or for a relaxed family evening, there’s the Byrd Theatre, which opened in 1928 and is now a Richmond landmark. Carytown has numerous grocery options, from Publix and Kroger to local favorite Ellwood Thompson’s. “They ship some things, but there’s an emphasis on integrating the local farmer with the shopper,” Stephens explains. “Their mission is for everyone to be their best, healthiest self.”
