A small village just 7 miles from the Wisconsin border
Ringwood in McHenry County is a small village between McHenry, Johnsburg and Richmond, only about 7 miles from the Wisconsin border. "It's considered a village because it has a post office and a couple of restaurants," says Dan Gleason, real estate broker at the Bremer Team - Keller Williams Success Realty. He says he probably goes through Ringwood six times a week. "It's tucked right in a great location, with easy access to anything you need: shopping, dining, employment."
Barnard Mill Road homes and subdivisions
Gleason says the area is more established than other villages nearby. There are some smaller, older homes, notably in the center of Ringwood, along Barnard Mill Road. "It's what you'd consider Main Street, USA," Gleason says. "But then they build the subdivisions." For the most part, the subdivision homes are custom-built. "They tend to be a little larger, with larger lots." Country Crossing, Oakview Estates, Pioneer Oaks and Glacial Trails are some communities built from the late 1990s to the 2010s. Most of the single-family homes in Ringwood are in the $400,000 to $500,000 range.
Ringwood is made up of contemporary properties.
Some Ringwood homes date back to the late 20th century.

U.S. Route 12 is to the north and leads straight into Wisconsin. Heading southeast, those looking to fly would reach O'Hare International Airport in about 50 miles; the Windy City is just a bit farther. For transit off the roadways, the McHenry Metra Station, approximately 5 miles from Ringwood, provides service on the Union Pacific Northwest line.
Rusty Nail Saloon and O’Leary’s
Within Ringwood, there are a few businesses, as well as spots where locals enjoy eats and merriment. Rusty Nail Saloon serves American grill standards, Mexican dishes and a fish fry on Fridays. Then desserts and hot beverages are right next door at Rusty Malts Coffee & Ice Cream, operated by the same owners as the Rusty Nail. O'Leary's Pub & Grub not only pleases when it comes to dining and drinks; its acoustic open jam and open mic nights are a favorite for local talents. The pub's annual chili cook-off brings neighborly competition, usually with some spice. They also host many community fundraising and charitable events.
It's a drive of less than 5 miles to reach shopping spots in McHenry and Johnsburg. The Shops at Fox River has big-box stores and popular brands. For boutiques and specialty stores, there's often something unique to check out at McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes. The incubator village rents tiny seasonal storefronts to small businesses and startups. Meijer and Jewel-Osco are usual stops for groceries, or for extra fresh ingredients, there's Stade's Farm & Market. Stade's produces copious amounts of fruits and vegetables and offers pick-your-own options and seasonal events.

Glacial Park, Fox Lake and more
With a mixed terrain left behind by glaciers over 12,000 years ago, Glacial Park Conservation Area offers 3,400 acres to explore. It includes natural habitats for endangered wildlife and over 8 miles of trails. A tributary of the Fox River, Nippersink Creek is ideal for kayaking, fishing and birding along the shore.
Since Fox Lake is one of the linked waterways of the Chain O' Lakes, there are plenty of beachside and waterborne activities in the area. "If they live in the area and are going to be boating, they'd go to the Chain of Lakes," Gleason says. He says proximity to Wisconsin's Lake Geneva, about 20 miles away, is another highlight. "People tend to go there to do more tourist-type of things."
Glacial Park visitors enjoy miles of scenic trails.
Locals here often head to Fox River or Fox Lake for activities on the water.

Winter picks include the Festival of Trees, McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes' holiday market and free ice skating at Miller Point Park.
The presence of industrial businesses like Dow
Industrial businesses have had a place in Ringwood, providing jobs for locals. Some years ago, Rohm and Haas, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company, and Modine Manufacturing Company, settled lawsuits related to a cluster of brain cancer cases in nearby McCullom Lake, allegedly caused by groundwater contamination. Modine closed their Ringwood site in 2014, though Dow opened a new packaging division, Pack Studios, in 2016.
