Living alongside the Avenue of the Giants in Northern California
The Avenue of the Giants twists and turns through towering redwoods for 31 miles in the dense wilderness of Northern California. This scenic roadway passes right through Miranda, a town of around 600 people situated alongside the south fork of the Eel River. Hours from the nearest major city, Miranda offers small-town living amid abundant nature. “We’re a small, self-sufficient community,” says Marcus Schaible, broker and owner of Emerald Realty and a current Miranda resident. “I love that I pull out of my driveway and take a right and I’m right in the middle of a redwood forest.”
This region of Northern California was once known as the epicenter of California’s illicit cannabis growing operations, but that industry was largely wiped out after the state legalized its cultivation in 2018. While some towns have suffered in the aftermath, Schaible says Miranda has been insulated from its impact — and it might even be a good thing. “The illegal cultivation doesn’t exist anymore, and because of that, we’re seeing a lot more people who are interested in coming out and exploring this area,” Schaible says.
Hiking, fishing and sprawling redwood forests
The teal blue waters of Eel River wind alongside the western edge of Miranda, surrounded by thick forested terrain. It’s a popular spot for swimming, paddling and fishing for steelhead and salmon. Hikers will find plenty of mild, moderate and steep climbs nearby, like Stephen’s Grove Loop Trail, a one-mile trek through massive stands of redwoods right outside Miranda. North of town is Humboldt Redwoods State Park, a sprawling, 53,000-acre park that boasts more than 100 miles of hiking trails. Nearly half of the park’s land is made up of old-growth forests, including redwoods that are more than 300 years old.
Eclectic homes in a small-town setting
Miranda’s residential streets feature an eclectic mix of homes shaded by tall tree canopies. Early 20th century cabins, midcentury ranch style homes and some more recently built homes can be found here on quiet, narrow streets. Roads extending into the hills surrounding the town showcase homes on larger lots surrounded by thick woodlands. Living higher up in the forests outside town is a decidedly different lifestyle, one where self-sufficiency is a requirement. Some homes don’t have reliable power or water. “If you’re going to live off grid, you’re going to need to know how to fix a generator or a water leak,” Schaible says. Prices in the area range from around $350,000 to $600,000.
Miranda Market
There are several shops, restaurants, a grocery store and a gas station in town. Miranda Market is where residents pick up produce, fresh bread, snacks and everyday essentials. It’s also where the local farmers’ market takes place every Monday between May and October. “There’s a farmers’ market every weekend in front of the grocery store. It’s a great place for people to get together,” Schaible says. Just up the street is Avenue Café, a local eatery where a tall statue of Sasquatch greets visitors at the front door. The café is known for its pizza, calzones and full bar. Early risers stop for coffee at Sips: Organic Coffee & More, a tiny shack serving espresso drinks and baked goods. If the statue hadn’t given it away, this is Sasquatch country, and there is a small gift shop in town called The Sasquatch Den that sells artisan wares and local crafts.
Public schools close to home
Students head about 12 miles south to the town of Redway to attend Redway Elementary School. Middle school and high school students only need to walk down the street to get to class. Miranda Junior High School and South Fork High School are both in town along the Avenue of the Giants. All three schools earn B-minus ratings from Niche. South Fork High is known for its lively varsity football games.
Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
Miranda is about is about 2 miles from State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, a celebrated roadway that traverses the California coastline. From there, it’s about 60 miles to Eureka, the largest city in Humboldt County, and 215 miles from San Francisco, the nearest major city. Residents in need of medical care have easy access to Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in nearby Garberville.
Increased risk of wildfires
Southern Humboldt is at a high risk for wildfires. In August 2020, the August Complex fire burned more than 1 million acres and more than 900 structures in this part of Northern California.
