Historic lumber town in the redwood forests of Northern California

Logging trucks rumbling onto the highway and the smell of freshly cut redwood lumber greet residents of Scotia, a Northern California lumber mill town in southern Humboldt County. Located just south of Rio Dell and Fortuna, this small community borders the scenic Eel River and is surrounded by dense redwood forests. “People like it because it’s a convenient location. You're near the redwoods and the river, but you’re still close to Fortuna," says real estate agent Liz Jimenez of Re/Max Humboldt, who lives in Scotia. It’s also home to an historic lodge, a local market and a post office.

Parks, forests and river adventures

Scotia residents have easy access to an array of state parks, hiking trails and river recreation. It's 5 miles from the Avenue of the Giants, a scenic highway that's dotted with trailheads that lead into the untouched redwood groves of Humboldt County. It's only a few miles from Humboldt Redwoods State Park, a 53,000-acre park where visitors can see some of the oldest and tallest redwoods in the world. There are also several small community parks in town, such as Scotia Ballpark and Fireman’s Park where the community can gather for some outdoor relaxation. The Eel River, which skirts the western edge of town, is a popular spot for salmon fishing, kayaking and swimming. Tourists take advantage of The Scotia Lodge, an historic inn on Main Street that was built in 1923.

Renovated and upgraded workforce housing

Scotia traces its origins back to 1863 when the Pacific Lumber Company founded it. It set up a lumber mill along Eel River with hundreds of small houses where workers and their families lived. The town was entirely owned by the company until it went bankrupt in 2008. The company's homes were sold to a new business, and the mill was bought by Humboldt Redwood Company, which has kept the logging industry buzzing for the last decade. The streets of Scotia now offer row after row of the original bungalow-style homes. They typically feature two bedrooms, one bathroom and a front porch. Yards are small, but there's still room for landscaping and gardens. Many of these homes have been renovated with modern appliances and upgraded utilities. “They’re fixing them up, replacing the sewer and electric lines,” Jimenez says. Prices range from around $285,000 to $315,000.

Fill up at the local market

Hoby’s Market & Deli is a one-stop shop for groceries, produce, sandwiches and gas. In fact, it’s the only place in town for food and gas. For everything else, residents will have to make the trek to Fortuna, about 9 miles north. This Humboldt town has a Safeway, an Ace Hardware store, a Walgreens and dining options that include everything from fast food to independent eateries and diners.

Young students can walk to school

Most students can walk to Stanwood A. Murphy Elementary School, which is in the heart of Scotia’s residential district. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a B-minus rating from Niche. Students and their families can take part in school-held events throughout the year, including a Halloween parade and a midsummer field day. Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway

State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, skirts around the eastern edge of Scotia, offering residents an easy way to get around. The highway connects with Eureka, 27 miles north, and Santa Rosa, about 150 miles south. There’s no public transportation in Scotia, so residents will need a car to get around.

Lumber mill noise

Scotia residents may experience more noise than surrounding areas because of its proximity to the lumber mill, and the large, lumber-carrying trucks that come to and from the mill.
