A rural farming community
Tucked along the banks of Lake Erie, Ripley is a small agricultural town with some of the most fertile farmland for grape growing in the state. Over a dozen wineries are scattered along U.S Route 20 and New York State Route 5, which run parallel along the lakeshore. "Rolling hills, vineyard landscapes, Lake Erie sunsets and snow-covered trails define life in Ripley," says Brandi Russo, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Holt–Mayville, who has been in the industry for over 20 years. Seasonal tourists flock to town for winery tours and lakefront campsites, fueling the local economy. However, for year-round residents, Ripley offers sweeping landscapes and a rural, small-town lifestyle along the New York and Pennsylvania border.

Lakefront beaches and campgrounds
Outdoor recreation in Ripley is as expansive as the shores of Lake Erie. "You have the lakefront, but it's not the same kind," says Mary Ford, associate broker with ERA Team VP Real Estate, who has 16 years of experience in the industry. "Big lakes don't necessarily have useable waterfronts." Some sections are usable, but much of the shoreline consists of steep drop-offs and protective tree lines. Ripley Beach features a narrow patch of rocky beachfront open to the public. Nine miles away, Barcelona Beach offers a sandy shoreline for summer sunbathing and swimming. Barcelona Beach also features a small historic stone lighthouse, a marina and a fishing pier. Residents can also head across state lines to explore Fishermans Beach's sandy shoreline in North East, Pennsylvania.
Seasonal campgrounds include Lakeside Campground, which sits adjacent to Lakeside Golf Course, a scenic 9-hole course nestled between vineyards. In the heart of town, Ripley Community Park features two playgrounds and a covered pavilion with picnic tables surrounded by vineyards. Expansive farmland and woodlands are home to Double D.A.B Riding Stable, an equestrian center that offers riding lessons, day camps and scenic trail rides for tourists. Ripley Rod and Gun Club is another private club hidden amongst the wooden forests near Twentymile Creek for hunters, trappers and anglers.
Surrounding woodlands feature snowmobile trails that lead to Canada, while additional pastimes include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Due to its rugged terrain and ample snowfall due to the lake effect, multiple ski resorts are located within a 70-mile radius. Peek'n Peak, a year-round destination with slopes, a golf course and a ropes course, is about 20 miles south.

Dozens of wineries and a few eateries
In the hamlet of Ripley, A small Main Street gives way to local eateries, casual pizza joints and Cooney's Island ice cream shop. Meeder's stands out as a community staple known for its homemade pies. "Everyone knows about Meeder's," Russo says. This classic small-town diner is the definition of Americana, with a no-frills interior, welcoming atmosphere and classic American fare. Three miles west, Sensory Smokehouse & Brewpub is a roadside restaurant surrounded by vineyards. Smoked meats and loaded mac and cheese are paired with craft brews and small-batch wine blends from the owners' vineyard.
Across the street, Quincy Cellars is a well-known winery and event venue that offers wine tastings in its stone cellar. A dozen other wineries are scattered between Erie and Westfield, while other vineyards are specifically for grape-growing. Welch's sources its produce from numerous local farms, including Ripley's Chess Family Farm. The Westfield Grape and Wine Festival celebrates the region's heritage every fall with grape stomping, wine tasting, live music, and more.
Down the road from Quincy Cellars, Schiedel's Little Red Wagon sits alongside the road. This Amish-owned produce cart sells seasonal fruits and vegetables on an honor system. Three miles away, Ripley is home to one Dollar General. North East, Pennsylvania, features national grocers 8 miles away while big-box stores surround Erie, 15 miles farther. Westfield also features national grocers and locally owned businesses 8 miles away.
