Homes on large lots with a great school system
Roanoke locals might know Cave Spring as Southwest County. This is a desirable location for many residents, with top-rated schools and opportunities to find a recently built home on a large lot without a far commute to Roanoke’s city center or Salem, which are both about 6 miles away. This area is sometimes confused as its own locality because it has its own schools – Cave Spring Elementary, Middle and High schools – but it’s part of Roanoke, and its administrative buildings are located here. The area offers easy access to everyday amenities, like grocery and department stores, as well as beautiful views, where the Blue Ridge Mountains and their namesake hue are always visible in the distance. Realtor with MKB Realtors and Roanoke local Scott Avis describes Cave Spring as “a real clean part of Roanoke. It’s a well-kept area with a mixture of different types of residents – younger and older people.”

Mature trees and wild brush sit on the sides of some streets, while large, neat and green lots dot others. There’s a mix between more established subdivisions, with properties from the 1980s and new neighborhoods with New Traditional houses. Potential homebuyers can find ranch-style, split-level or bilevel single-family homes, as well as two-bedroom townhouses, for between $200,000 and $400,000. Colonial Revivals and single-story properties with contemporary interiors and large lot sizes typically range from $500,000 to $700,000, while recently built New Traditional homes cost between $700,000 and $1 million.

Garst Mill Park is tucked within a residential area and roughly follows the Garst Mill Stream for about a mile, with bridges crossing the rushing water. Visitors wander the paved Garst Mill Greenway, kids run around the playground and pickleball players take to the courts. Golfers hit the links at Hunting Hills Country Club, where there are also tennis courts, swimming pools and restaurants. The Roanoke area is also surrounded by hiking trails and outdoor opportunities that keep locals busy on the weekends. And for some indoor recreation, the sprawling South County Library is located in Cave Spring. Here, residents can take part in the Caturday event, where folks read to cats, study for an upcoming exam or chill on a couch with a book.

Avis notes, “You can get just about anywhere in Roanoke in about 20 minutes, and there’s not a ton of traffic.” Locals can reach Roanoke’s city center to the northeast or downtown Salem to the northwest in about 6 miles using Electric Road in either direction. Locals can also take Electric Road about 9 miles northeast to reach Vinton.
