Retail and relaxation in Greater Bergen County

Suburbs back up into swaths of parkland in Greater Bergen County, a place where residents can find relaxation and retail. Saddle River County Park buffers much of the north and west end, but the Garden State Parkway slices through it, taking drivers over the water to Grumpy’s, a sourdough pizza place that exudes classic hole-in-the-wall spirit. “This is an area where people buy and stay because it really sums up the suburban ideal,” says Daniel Simone, broker associate with KW Commercial and a resident of nearby Rutherford. “Everyone from Hudson County residents to former New Yorkers will move this way.” Having these clearly defined zones of activity also helps to give the neighborhood a more solid identity – it’s not a place where residents are likely to get lost or turned around. Westfield Garden State Plaza presses against the east end with a buffet of stores, while state Route 17 is a commercial corridor coursing across the south end. Hugged on all sides by indoor and outdoor activity, Greater Bergen County offers residents a mixed landscape.

Calming streets with Cape Cod, split-level and minimal traditional homes

The residential layout in Greater Bergen County is mostly a grid with simple, calming street names recalling nature, like Cedar Drive and Forest Place. Many of these streets have sidewalks, encouraging residents to get outdoors. And if these street names aren’t suburban enough, the housing certainly is. "The town itself is similar to Maywood in terms of housing styles and a variety of pricing," says Simone Healey, a broker associate at Vikki Healey Properties. "Homeowners are attracted to both areas for a lot of the same reasons." Minimal traditional homes, Cape Cods and split-levels are on display, along with assorted smaller-scale homes that mix bungalow and ranch styles. Prices tend to range from $440,000 to $900,000. Houses are pushed back on neat squares of grass, with modest landscaping near the front door, like hedges and shrubs. Often, but not always, the properties will have tall mature trees.

Sports facilities at Hackensack High

Midland School is the only school in the Rochelle Park School District, educating children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It receives a B-minus from Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. Facing the tan low-slung brick edifice of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the campus has received improvements in recent years with a new parking lot and playground containing basketball courts, pickleball courts, four square and a pavilion. Hackensack High is also rated B, and sport facilities are abundant, ranging from a pool and a fitness center to fields for baseball, soccer and field hockey. Students can also apply to attend magnet programs at Bergen County Technical Schools.

Saddle River County Park offers extensive outdoor recreation

Backing up to residential streets and sprawling nearly 600 acres, Saddle River County Park is clearly a top destination for outdoor recreation in Greater Bergen County. The park is organized into five separate areas, linked by paved paths open to cyclists and pedestrians. In the Glen Rock area, visitors can pass a waterfall and a duck pond, while the Otto Pehle area offers a pond where fishers can catch bass. Scattered throughout are playgrounds and facilities for basketball, tennis, roller hockey and softball. There’s also a swim club that meets at a pool on park grounds. The Rochelle Park Swim Club hosts events like Christmas in July and Family Twilight Swim. More annual events like an Easter egg hunt and Halloween parade can be found at Carlock Field, just a few blocks east.

Diverse food choices at Westfield Garden State Plaza

In the southern fingertip of the neighborhood, where Route 17 meets Essex Street, there’s a concentration of eateries. While chains like Chipotle and Jersey Mike’s are present, so are smaller locally owned restaurants like ReBAR & Kitchen, where craft beer is paired with burgers. But 3 miles north up Route 17 is the Westfield Garden State Plaza, where visitors can grab ramen, ice cream, Mexican food and modern American cuisine. Bergen Town Center, on state Route 4, includes a Whole Foods and a Target.

Manhattan is 15 miles away

The walkable aspect of this neighborhood certainly helps it to feel cozy. But it’s worth noting that the transportation routes running through here can take residents far afield. Interstates 80 and 95 can be picked up immediately, shuttling commuters roughly 15 miles to Manhattan in about 45 minutes. For public transportation within the neighborhood, buses can be picked up along Passaic Street and Rochelle Avenue, two of the main drags that eventually intersect near the mall.
