The Beechwood neighborhood is known for ease of living.
A quiet place in the city
Folks living in Beechwood are a mile and a half northeast of Downtown Rochester, yet enjoy quiet days and nights in close proximity to lifelong neighbors. Here familiarity manifests in things like community gardens, bars platforming local talent and small open parties just to celebrate knowing each other. Seth Foltz is an associate real estate broker with Howard Hana who describes Beechwood as a mostly working-class neighborhood. “It’s quiet, but it’s more urban than suburban,” he says.
Public transportation is easily accessed in the Beechwood neighborhood,
Lots of bus routes
East Main Street serves as one of Beechwood’s most important thoroughfares, taking folks on wheels downtown or hopping on the Inner Loop less than a mile southwest. Other streets like North Goodman Street, Bay Street and Culver Road help East Main form the neighborhood’s borders while Webster Avenue cuts through the area diagonally. All these roads have bus routes running at least partway through them.
Homes in Beechwood boast distinctive gabled roofs and quaint porches.
Homes from 1930
Given Beechwood’s longevity, homes built between 1900 and 1930 dominate the housing market, with prices ranging from $30,000 to $190,000 in most cases. A few properties get as high as $300,000. Colonial Revivals built to accommodate the tighter lots of urban environments are a common sight with foursquare houses and the occasional Queen Ann sprinkled in. Many properties are bordered by chain-link fences accented with foliage.

Johnny's Irish Pub is the place to be
Johnny’s Irish Pub offers beer and good vibes as one of Beechwood’s prime locations. Patrons enjoy a string-lit bar, novelty 20th-century Irish decor and live music from local bands. City Rochester Public Market off Hayward Avenue operates every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. “They supply fresh vegetables, dairy and meat products, all kinds of things. It’s like a farmers market,” says Foltz about the community-run shop. There's also a Save A-lot on Ackerman Street. Retail shoppers head to The Mall at Greece Ridge, a 10-mile drive northwest.
Grand Avenue Park is a block from home
Two parks provide Beechwood residents with recreational space close to home. Grand Avenue Park offers a large grass yard with a playground that lies in the neighborhood’s center, making it the most accessible. Fourth and Peck Street Park is the larger of the two with multiple playgrounds and denser tree shade in Beechwood’s southwest corner. Non-park outdoor spaces like Beechwood Community Garden on Parsells Avenue or Public Garden EDEN on Denver Street are available to those who live close by. There is also the Parks and Recreation Center on Webster Avenue with multiple fields and playgrounds.
East Upper High School serves 711 students in grades 9-12.
East Upper High School has an Anime Club
Audubon Elementary School sits near the heart of Beechwood, providing families with a close place to send their young students. The school earns a C-minus from Niche and teaches grades K-6. From there, kids often move on to East Lower School, which earns another C-minus. When Freshman year peeks around the corner, students enroll in East Upper High School to carry them to graduation. The B-minus-rated school offers engaging extracurricular activities, such as Anime Club.

Grilling under the eclipse
While big events downtown are always fun, Beechwood has its own smaller festivities held anywhere from the bar to the park. Johnny’s Irish Pub, for example, graces its patrons with open mics and open jam sessions from time to time.

Crime
Beechwood's score on the CAP Index is 5, whereas the national average is 4. The neighborhood has notably higher CAP Index Scores for violent crimes. Local organizations, such as the Beechwood Neighborhood Coalition, raise funds for local law enforcement and pressure Rochester's legislature to lend support as well.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
