"Homestead Heights” is a residential area situated in the northeastern quadrant of Rochester.
A Rochester neighborhood in transition
Just outside of the city of Rochester, Homestead Heights is a neighborhood in transition that balances urban amenities with suburban tranquility. “You get more house out in these neighborhoods,”says Ashley Nowak, an agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. The area has been described as “an area in transition” as revitalization efforts work to reclaim the neighborhood’s charm.
Colorful homes, affordable prices
Houses in Homestead Heights range from mundane bungalows to eclectic arts and crafts architecture. “Houses are more colorful here, and people are bolder with their housing designs,” says Jason Ruffino from RE/MAX Realty Group. Most of the homes were built in the early 1900s, divided by narrow driveways that don’t entirely alleviate the need for street parking. Mature trees cast shade from their strategic placement between the street curbs and sidewalks, creating a sense of safety for pedestrians. Streets are evenly spaced out and run parallel from north to south between Clifford Avenue and Bay Street, so the area doesn’t feel crowded or dense.
One of the biggest attractions to the neighborhood is the entry-level pricing that makes Homestead Heights accessible to first-time homebuyers. Single-family homes range in price from $150,000 to $200,000 for a fully renovated 3-bedroom home. Nowak says that housing inventory doesn’t tend to turn over very frequently in Rochester. “They’re all older homes, so there’s been turnover for people who have lived there for a long time and now they’re putting them up for sale,” she said. “That’s created opportunities for first-time homebuyers and investors.”

Pull up a stool at local bars
While Homestead Heights feels like a secluded residential enclave, it’s still within walking distance of charming neighborhood cafes and restaurants. Savoia Pastry Shoppe on Clifford Avenue helps satisfy the sweet tooth with their selection of delectable Italian pastries. The neighborhood bar Merchants Grill serves pub grub like wings and pizzas in a setting that is equal parts diner and dive bar, while Johnny’s Irish Pub hosts live music, open mic nights, and Thursday trivia games. Homestead Heights residents have access to a Walgreens on the corner of Bay Street and Culver Road, and a Save a Lot grocery store just south of the neighborhood offers discount shopping. The neighborhood is also convenient to a Head Start childcare center located on Clifford Avenue, which offers early childhood education. Family pets can access care at the Rochester Community Animal Clinic located just off Bay Street.

Public Market open three days a week
The city-run Rochester Public Market is a cornerstone of the local culture, and the public market grounds are only 1.5 miles from Homestead Heights. Established in 1905, the market is open year-round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Vendors occupy over 300 stalls on some days, selling produce, eggs and dairy products as well as baked goods and flowers. The market is also home to special events throughout the year, ranging from holiday parties, free concerts and art shows.
Beyond market visits, families can enjoy the local neighborhood bowling alley L&M Lanes. Located in an unassuming brick building built in 1926, the 12-land bowling center just south of Homestead Heights serves pub fare and 18 beers on tap.
