Between I-490 and Monroe Avenue’s bars and diners
Cradled by the major commuter route of Interstate 490 to the south and the dense commercial strip of Monroe Avenue to the north is Pearl-Meigs-Monroe, a neighborhood brimming with turn-of-the-century multifamily homes. Named for its three main roads, Pearl Street, Meigs Street and Monroe Avenue, the neighborhood has recently been nicknamed the "Garden District" by residents to give it a new identity and tie it to the parks nearby. It features unique shops, historic homes and walkable, tree-lined streets that attract students from the University of Rochester and more from around the city. "It's a friendly place for young people," says real estate agent Joseph Porcaro with Revolution Real Estate. Porcaro moved to Rochester in 2006 and lived in Pearl-Meigs-Monroe for his first two years in the area. "It was a great start for me. It's fun to be out and about here because there are so many bars and restaurants."

Mark's Texas Hots has been serving it's famous Hamburger Plate for over 40 years.
Rochester's signature dish at Mark's Texas Hots
Monroe Avenue used to run a trolley line frequented by the city's industrial workers commuting downtown. Though the streetcars in Rochester were phased out in the 1940s, in their wake were bustling roads with commercial development well within walking distance for many city locals. Pearl-Meigs-Monroe residents can walk to Monroe Avenue for some amenities, including laundromats and boutiques selling secondhand clothes. The street also has a reputation for being a modest destination for nightlife in town, with several bars and restaurants hosting live music or weekly events. Mark's Texas Hots is a down-home neighborhood diner that offers Rochester's signature dish, the garbage plate — home fries topped with ground beef and a chili sauce. Inside Enright Wine & Spirits is a bar called Enright's Thirst Parlor, with dartboards and a weekly karaoke night. The bar doesn't serve food and has a Bring Your Own Plate policy, so patrons can grab takeout or have dinner delivered to the bar to enjoy with their drink of choice. Folks looking for a sports bar can venture into Turcott's Taproom, which regularly hosts soccer watch parties, while Bug Jar is an alternative bar up the street with DJs and live music nights. Abundance Food Co-op is the closest grocery store, a few blocks west in South Wedge.
Hiking in Cobb's Hill Park and family fun at the Strong National Museum of Play

A few blocks east of Pearl-Meigs-Monroe is Cobb's Hill Park, a popular green space spanning 109 acres, with nature trails around the glistening Cobb's Hill Reservoir and paths through Washington Grove, an old-growth forest. The park also has baseball, softball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, a playground and a small lodge by Lake Riley for cookouts. The Strong National Museum of Play is just off Howell Street and is a city-loved children's museum. Its exhibits highlight different methods of play, from the National Toy Hall of Fame to eGameRevolution, dedicated to video games.
