Nestles between State Street and Aldeen Park

Over on Rockford’s eastern side, Alpine Ridge combines access to shopping and dining with an active outdoor lifestyle. The neighborhood borders Aldeen Park and stretches close to East State Street, one of Rockford’s busier thoroughfares, so residents can choose whether they want to spend their days strolling along the park trails or discovering their new favorite restaurant. Additionally, Edgebrook Shops is just 1.5 miles to the north, offering seasonal events and a farmers market. Still, with some distance from State Street and other major shopping centers, Alpine Ridge is able to maintain a quiet residential feel.

Skiing and sledding at the parks around Alpine Ridge

Just across North Alpine Road from Alpine Ridge, Aldeen Park offers wide open spaces popular with picnickers and walking trails through the woods. In the summer, the field is prone to floods from Keith Creek overflowing, but in the winter transforms into a local sledding spot. On the other side of State Street, people can cool off in the pool at Alpine Park, which boasts two slides and a diving board. In the warmer months, Alpine Hills Adventure Park opens its grounds to hiking and mountain biking. In the winter, Rockford’s natural snowfall and artificial snow-blowing machines transform it into a skiing and tubing destination.

Pancakes and Swedish meatballs along State Street

When going out for a bite to eat, Alpine Ridge residents have the choice to stop in somewhere along State Street or go north to Edgebrook Shops. Along State Street, Johnny Pamcakes has an old-fashioned diner feel with vinyl booths and a big sunroom inside. While it serves breakfast all day, people can also order steaks, pasta and seafood for lunch or dinner. The Stockholm Inn features Swedish décor, including a wall adorned with regal family crests and an electric guitar with blue-and-yellow Swedish flag design that patrons can strum for good luck. Menu items include Swedish pancakes and meatballs. Baker Street Burgers is part of Edgebrook Shops and serves standard pub food, though many people enjoy the General Tsao chicken sandwich. For groceries, Gray’s Food Stores is 1.5 miles north, by Edgebrook. Schnucks is just under 2 miles away. On the other side of Aldeen Park, Perryville Shopping Center and State Street Market have Target, Aldi and Walmart, all within 4 miles of Alpine Ridge.

Accessing State Street's restaurants via motorized scooter

When getting around Rockford, Alpine Ridge residents can use State Street and Alpine Road to access most of the essentials. State Street runs east to west, connecting the community with downtown Rockford 3.5 miles to the west and the far eastern shopping centers. Two Rockford medical facilities are along this thoroughfare as well—UW Health Swedish American Hospital is 2.5 miles east and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is just under 2.5 miles west. Tyler Ragan, a Realtor with Dickerson and Neiman Realtors, also shares that many people get around the restaurants and shops along State Street through rented motorized scooters. Alpine Road connects people to the area’s parks and Edgebrook Shops. For trips beyond Rockford, Chicago Rockford International Airport is about 7.5 miles away.

Edgebrook and downtown Rockford's farmers markets

With the community so close to Edgebrook Shops, residents can head there on Wednesday mornings for the Edgebrook Farmers Market from May to October. Featuring different produce, artisan and garden supplies, this market has served Rockford for 45 years. In late November, the shops have an annual Christmas tree lighting followed by caroling by some of the private schools. The town televises the event, so people across Rockford can watch and get in the holiday spirit. “Downtown, they have City Market, which is Fridays,” Ragan says, highlighting another popular farmers market. “They’ve got a big overhang over the market and a bunch of vendors that come down for great food. That’s always a big ordeal.”

The expanding industry and economy in eastern Rockford

Eastern Rockford may experience more activity after the launching of Hard Rock Casino. “The casino is going to be a big thing in Rockford,” Ragan says. “I think everybody is excited about it, and it will definitely get some people out of the city of Chicago—something that will bring in a lot of jobs.” The casino plans to open Labor Day weekend 2024 and will feature over 64,000 square feet of gaming and entertainment space.
