Belle Meade attracts people from all walks of life
A mainly residential community 3 miles southeast of downtown Rockford, the Belle Meade neighborhood is sandwiched between the businesses that line State Street, one of the main east/west roads and the businesses on Charles Street. The neighborhood attracts a wide array of residents. “There are people who have lived here a long time, and then I see young families heading to the neighborhood preschool,” says Sully Cadengo, a Realtor with Stateline Real Estate LLC. Eighty-four percent of the people living in Belle Meade own their homes and those who are here like being close to three large parks within the Rockford Park District system.
Alpine Hills Adventure Park camps
Depending on whether it’s summer or winter, what you can do at Alpine Hills Adventure Park changes. In summer, trails are open for mountain biking or running. In the winter, the snow park is available for tubing, and snow can be made from a machine if it’s cold enough. Nature Quest is a summer camp for ages 5-12 that covers all aspects of the outdoors. Yeti Camp goes for a few days in January, where campers can do snowshoeing and snowboarding and enjoy other nature-themed activities in the snow. Dahlquist and Twin Sister Hills Parks are just a few miles to the west. Dahlquist Park has a walking path about a half mile around the park’s perimeter. Within, there’s a baseball diamond, tennis and basketball courts. Keith Creek flows at the park's edge and connects with Twin Sister Hills Park to the south. A large hill is part of this park, a popular place to be in the winter.
Single-family and multi-family homes in Belle Meade
Some of the residents have been in the neighborhood for as long as the houses have, which date to the 1950s. The ranch-style, Cape Cod and split-level styles range from $130,000 to $250,000 and are sturdily built. “You’ll see many houses built with brick,” Cadengo says. Some houses are on quarter acre lots, and living space is between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet. While over 90% of the homes are single-family, there are also a few condos priced between $100,000 and $200,000. Cadengo describes the neighborhood as quiet, and that’s reflected in the CAP crime score index, which puts the neighborhood at a 3, below the national average of 4. None of the eight categories are rated above a 3.
Restaurants along Charles and State Streets
Those looking for a close destination for eating out can head south to Charles Street for Burrito Bravo. This unique Mexican restaurant opens at 10 a.m. daily and offers breakfast options. One option is a breakfast tortilla that contains scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes and jalapenos. A restaurant inside a bowling alley on State Street is known for good food. Shooters Bar & Grill is part of Don Carter Lanes. Shooters is known for Wing Thursdays and Fish Fry Fridays. For groceries, a Schnucks in the Rockford Plaza Shopping Center on Charles Street. For an Asian-themed food stock, Blessed Asian Market is a modest-sized local business. Other businesses on Charles Street include Tri-B Hardware & Supply and Kegel’s Bicycle Store.
Fairview Early Childhood Center is a neighborhood preschool
Young learners in Belle Meade can attend Fairview Early Childhood Center, a part of Rockford School District 205. The school does not get a Niche grade and accepts children younger than 5, with classroom education for children as young as 3. Rolling Green Elementary School receives a C from Niche and has a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Bernard W. Flinn Middle School gets a C-minus. Athletic teams at Rockford East High School have the unusual nickname of E-Rabs. The ‘e’ stands for east, as in east Rockford, and the ‘rab’ stands for the team’s red and black colors. The school gets a C-plus Niche grade.
Public transportation bus stops on Charles and State Streets
There are sidewalks along many neighborhood streets in Belle Meade. For those who rely on public transportation, there are bus stops courtesy of the Rockford Mass Transit District that stop on Charles Street to the south and State Street to the north. Both streets meet at the UW Health Swedish American Hospital, a little east of downtown. This neighborhood is about 90 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. “Not many people work in downtown Chicago and make that long commute. Some people work in the northwest suburbs,” says Mike Lunde, a Realtor with Gambino Realtors with 22 years of experience. The nearest Metra commuter rail station is 30 miles away in Harvard, though there are plans to construct a Rockford Metra station that should be available in 2027. It’s a 20-minute drive to the Chicago/Rockford International Airport. One of Rockford’s largest employers is in the same area, Collins Aerospace. Two thousand people work there and focus on creating high-tech equipment for commercial aircraft and military planes.
