In the 1830s, a small town was founded on the east side of the Rock River that eventually combined with another small town on the west side to form what eventually became the city of Rockford. That eastern section is what is now called the Haight Village Historic District. “In this neighborhood, there’s a lot of what I call ‘they don’t build them like that anymore’ houses,” says Conor Brown, the CEO of the Northwest Alliance of Realtors, based in Rockford. “There’s also not much turnover in this neighborhood. It attracts lovers of historic architecture, and they tend to stay.” In 1981, the neighborhood was recognized as Rockford’s first historic district, and in 1987 was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Oldest houses in Haight Village date to the 1840s
Another part of the neighborhood's appeal is the price range of the houses. “Rockford is traditionally in the top 15 percent of affordability in the country,” Brown says. “People can get a historic house with a lot of space.” The price ranges from $75,000 to $300,000 for Victorian houses, some with Second Empire and Queen Anne influences. The size of the houses varies from 1,500 to 3,500 square feet. One of the oldest houses in Haight Village Historic District is a Gothic-style house built in 1843 and home to the first mayor of Rockford, Willard Wheeler. Some homes need renovation. “There are a lot of contractors and homeowners who take advantage of the proximity of Nicholson Hardware on 2nd Avenue,” Brown says. One of the most iconic buildings in the neighborhood is the former Rockford Watch factory on Madison Street, which will soon be converted into loft apartments.
Composed of Victorian and Queen Anne style homes, prices range from 75 to 300 hundred thousand.

Erlander Home Museum
An Italianate house built in 1871 is home to the Erlander Home Museum, which displays the history of the Swedish population in Rockford. The Swedes were the largest immigrant group to settle in Rockford in the 1850s. The museum displays Rockford-made furniture, an extensive collection of dolls and various artifacts. It is open for tours on Wednesdays and by appointment. The Swedish Historical Society of Rockford runs the museum. At the corner of Grove and 3rd Streets is the Nordic Cultural Center, where meeting space can be rented for events. In mid-June, the society puts on the Midsommar Festival in the museum and cultural center area. It features Swedish food, crafts, music and a Swedish pancake eating contest.

Shaded playground at Ingersoll Centennial Park
A group of trees provides shade for the playground equipment at Ingersoll Centennial Park. The play area and streetside parking are available on Oak Street, while most of the rest of the park is green space where soccer games can be played amid the backdrop of the Rockford Watch Factory building. A riverside building that was once an industrial facility on the banks of the Rock River is now the UW Health Sports Factory. “The building has been renovated and is a state-of-the-art facility that attracts volleyball and basketball tournaments,” Brown says. The center is also home to clinics, lessons and practices for various sports, including pickleball.
