Rock River parks, downtown amenities, and the Peaches
In pop culture, Rockford has two main claims to fame: the sock monkey, and the Rockford Peaches. The latter was one of the nation’s first women's sports leagues, and their wild success carried fans through World War II into the present day, as they are now immortalized in A League of Their Own. Though it’s been years since teams filled the dugouts and audiences watched with bated breath, the original entrance to Beyers Peaches Stadium still stands, “Home of the Rockford Peached” emblazoned proudly at the top. Some homeowners in Rockford’s Riverview community can see the entrance from their front yards, though baseball history is far from the only draw to the area. The community sits blocks from the Rock River and waterfront parks, and main thoroughfares like Kishwaukee Avenue lead north to the downtown sector.

Enjoying Polish Fest, watching the Ski Broncs and more
“A reason a lot of my buyers that are relocating from Chicago or Milwaukee, besides affordability, is how many activities go on,” says Sully Cadengo, Realtor with Stateline Real Estate and Rockford resident. “It’s super family friendly and if you’re on a budget...the city just spent millions of dollars on a riverfront library, there’s a lot of free stuff for families, and hundreds of parks.” The smell of about 20,000 pierogies wafts through the Riverview community each summer during Polish Fest, hosted by St Stanislaus Kostka Church. Church members are hard at work stuffing the fried pockets with meat and potatoes in the weeks before the event. Skirts twirl as pairs decked out in traditional garb dance to live music. Other performances are of the waterborne variety, provided by the Ski Broncs. “We have a team of young people who do tricks up and down the Rock River,” says Claire Linder, Realtor with CENTURY 21 and Rockford resident. “They’re pulled by skis and there are bleachers for people to come watch.”

Hitting Broadway for groceries or a bite to eat
Whether they’re traveling on foot, by Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) bus or by car, Riverview residents are well-connected to the rest of the city. The up-and-coming Midtown District is redeveloping much of 7th Street to bring foot traffic to its dining and community center-filled stretch. Closer to home is Broadway and its commercial enclaves. Folks can grab essentials from Family Dollar before Pull around the drive-thru at Mr. J’s, serving to-go options from Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef to Maxwell Polish and pork chops. In the opposite direction across the river is Guanajuato Rockford, serving tacos, fresh produce and meats on Marchesano Drive. Hot breakfasts are plated in a classic diner setting at Behr Den Restaurant, a remote joint sandwiched between industrial centers north of the community.

From Black Hawk Park to the Discovery Museum downtown
Beyers Peaches Stadium hosts frequent tours of the grounds, with historical placards in the dugouts. For everyday outdoor activity, Black Hawk Park sprawls along the Rock River with several sheltered or sunny gathering spaces, plus a playground. 1 mile across the river is Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden: 155 acres of forested trails, paved pathways and plant life. A rotating schedule of decorative themes keeps visitors on their toes—they may run into giant bug sculptures on their walk or larger-than-life Lego works. All themes aim to educate folks on the natural habitats in the park and in Rockford.
The science-based educational opportunities continue downtown at Rockford’s museums. “Our exhibits all relate to STEAM,” says Ann Marie Walker, Director of Marketing & Communications at the Discovery Center Museum. “We have a bubble play gallery where they can encase themselves in a body bubble...we have a maker space where we’ve got real tools and real materials, recycled materials kids can design and build wherever their imagination takes them. We have a terrific outdoor park as well – even a lot of the exhibits out there have a science twist to them.”

Getting around Rockford from Riverview
Rockford’s dense center includes infrastructure for multiple means of travel, and the city is invested in improving its roadways and walkability long-term. “It’s large but everything is easy to get to,” says Linder. “And we have the hard rock casino opening this summer. It’s the first land casino in Illinois, all the rest of the casinos in Illinois have to be on water...Rockford fought very long and hard to get that casino here and on land. It’s right off I-90. It would be probably 15 minutes from downtown.” RMTD bus stops on Kishwaukee Street and Broadway lead both directions throughout the city, and a brand-new Metra station will connect Rockford to Chicago, though plans for completion are still a few years away. Until then, drivers take I-90 for the 86-mile trip to the Windy City.
Folks get around from nearby RMTD bus stops or by traversing main roads like Kishwaukee Street.
