Rockville is a historic industrial neighborhood in Connecticut.

Moving to the Rock

Set in the northeastern corner of Vernon, the former industrial town of Rockville has a history that dates back 200 years, when the village centered around textile mills. Centuries later, the mills are gone, but the tradition of “Going to the Rock” continues with Hartford professionals looking for a charming neighborhood and easy commute. Growth and renovation have been steady in recent years, leading to a renewal of interest in its reasonably-priced homes, well-ranked schools and outdoor recreation. As a result, Rockville is growing into a historic swatch of Hartford County that’s developing new traditions to go along with its blue-collar past.

A popular meeting spot for locals and their families, Henry Park features a baseball field, basketball courts, a playground and a picnic grove. The Horowitz pool is available for swimming lessons and cooling off during the summer. Standing tall above the park is Fox Hill Tower, a 72-foot-tall Romanesque tower built in the 1930s to memorialize all Rockville and Vernon war veterans.

Creative Writing at Rockville High

Students in Rockville can begin at Maple Street School, which scores a C-plus with Nitch. Afterward, they’ll attend B-minus scoring Vernon Center Middle School before enrolling in Rockville High School, which has a B. In addition to an active athletics department, Rockville High is well-known for its Creative Writing program. “Many of the writers who come out of this school district are nationally recognized,” says Jennifer Johnston-Marius, Director of the Rockville Public Library.

Happenings on and around the Rock

Winters bring the annual Rockville Winterfest to the neighborhood, where locals celebrate the season with a parade, floats, food and entertainment. In the fall, the New England Civil War Museum holds Living History Day, which includes infantry and musket demonstrations, cannon firing, a dress parade and more.

A wide variety of housing options

Rockville residents like variety. “You’ve got a section with historic homes, then a suburban section, then a more rural section,” says Johnston-Marius. “There are a lot of options.” As a result, an assortment of housing styles are popular, ranging from Cape Cod fixer-uppers in the mid-$100,000s to renovated Victorians in the mid-$300,000s. Contemporary-style homes built in the 21st century can reach the low-$500,000s, while sprawling Colonial revival homes are just shy of $1 million.

A straight shot to Hartford

Interstate 84 is one of the main thoroughfares for Rockville and connects the neighborhood to Hartford, some 16 miles west. “One of our biggest draws is that we’re close to Hartford,” says Johnston-Marius. “Most people work there.” A public bus service is also available, with pickups scheduled hourly.

Convenient shopping and local soul food

When it’s time to eat, residents can visit Craig’s Kitchen, which specializes in soul food like gumbo, fried chicken and collard greens. Further west is Bianna’s Pizza, which features gourmet pizzas, gyros, and grinders. Familiar chains like Ace Hardware and the Family Dollar are readily available, while groceries and other necessities can be picked up at the Stop & Shop.

This is a small town. Living in the Historical District of Vernon-Rockville makes getting a job let alone a career here is town very difficult. I would have to travel to a major city like Hartford in order to get a job.
