Small rural community in Rogue Valley
Deep into the forests and foothills of southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley is Wimer, a small community home to a population of less than 500. “Wimer is a much more rural area than most of the valley,” says Jed Joling, a local real estate broker with exp Realty. “There are a lot of retirees that move into the Wimer area because they want to have some acreage to use and don’t want to be in town, but there are also a lot of families and working-class folks that live in the area.” The nearest town, Rogue River, is an 8-mile drive south of the community. Most homeowners live on large, secluded lots full of pine tree thickets and farmland. Although Wimer sits on a relatively flat valley, it’s also surrounded by snow-tipped Cascades that make for a stunning visual. Wimer has an overall CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average score of 4.

Locals use public land for outdoor recreation
For most Wimer residents, the great outdoors is only a few steps away from their back porch. “There’s a lot of public land in the Wimer area that many off-roaders, ATV riders and hunters use,” Joling says. Adjacent to the community is the Evans Valley Community Center, where residents can attend exercise classes at the fitness center, and children can play in Little League baseball games. Joling says that some of the area's most popular outdoor recreation spots are located south of Wimer in the town of Rogue River and its namesake river, where people swim, raft and fish. At the town’s 5-acre Palmerton Park, locals can access picnic facilities, a playground and walking paths lined with more than 80 different tree species. Parkgoers can cross a suspended cable walking bridge over Evans Creek and venture into the adjacent Anna Classick Bicentennial Park. Bicentennial Park features outdoor athletic facilities, including tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a half basketball court. The oldest house in Rogue River, a log cabin built in 1876, is also in the park.

Craftsman and ranch-style homes on multi-acre lots
Most of the existing homes in Wimer were built during the mid- to late 20th century, and, according to Joling, most homes are either ranch- or Craftsman-style residences on large rural lots. “The lot sizes in the Wimer area vary; I would say the average size is around five acres,” Joling says. “Prices also vary, but a 3-bedroom 2-bathroom on a few acres is usually around $500,000 - $600,000.” Homebuyers can also find traditional-style bungalows on much smaller lots and a 55-plus residential community around the center of Wimer; homes in this area can cost anywhere from $150,000 to $450,000. Most properties have gravel driveways and plenty of room for parking, and this area notably depends on personal vehicles.

Crossing the historic Wimer Covered Bridge
The Wimer Covered Bridge over Evans Creek is the community’s primary entrance; the bridge was built in the late 19th century and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. To learn more about the valley’s history, people can head to the local History Museum at the Evans Valley Community Center, which features exhibits with documents and artifacts from the valley’s past. The center also serves as an event venue for things like concerts, art shows and holiday celebrations. Nineteen miles away from Wimer is The Oregon Vortex, a popular tourist attraction and “mystery spot” that acts as an impressive visual illusion. The Vortex itself is a dramatically slanted wooden cabin – however, when visitors enter the cabin, they don’t feel off-balance at all and can stand perfectly upright, seemingly defying gravity.

The most popular of these are Paisano’s Italian Kitchen, Taqueria La Guacamaya and Baci’s Pizza and Pasta,” Joling says. He also notes that while Rogue River is limited in shopping, the town has a small grocery store called Ray’s Food Place, a Main Building Supply hardware store and the Rogue River Pharmacy. Joling says that most people in the area head to the nearby cities of Grants Pass, Medford and Central Point for the big box stores and shopping centers.
