About Rosemount, MN

About Rosemount, MN

Urban growth with a small-town feel

Located on the southern outskirts of the Twin Cities, Rosemount attracts buyers with its small-town feel, A-rated schools and ongoing new development. “Rosemount is growing fast,” says Austin Eaton, Realtor at Real Broker. “There’s a lot of new amenities because a lot of the land has been sold to builders for development.” Established as a city in 1975, Rosemount was first inhabited by the Santee Sioux tribe in the mid-19th century. After the federal government signed a treaty for ownership, Irish Catholics were among its first settlers, leaving a long-standing Celtic heritage as demonstrated by the shamrock symbol on this city's flag. Rosemount High School champions ‘the Irish’ spirit and the city also hosts its annual Leprechaun Days summer festival. Today, the city is home to nearly 30,000 residents and top employers, including the District 196 Schools system and Flint Hills Resources, an oil and coal manufacturer, which combined provide around 5,000 jobs to the area's workforce. Rosemount is among the three fastest-growing suburbs in the Twin Cities area. “It’s mainly because of the available land, but Rosemount is a very good community,” adds Eaton, who has been selling in the area for over nine years. Offering a know-your-neighbor vibe and year-round recreation, Rosemount is on the rise, just 15 miles south of the Twin Cities.

New builds and expansive development

The real estate market in Rosemount is competitive due to its wide range of housing options and the recent influx of new construction. Most homes here were built in the early 2000s, although some 1950s-era builds remain, as well as brand-new construction options. Housing styles here range from clusters of condos and townhouses to ranch-style, split-level and Craftsman-influenced single-family homes. Growth is happening in the city, with an average of 300 new single-family homes built per year. Once completed, the ongoing Amber Fields Development will have 1,900 new housing units across 435 acres. “Development in cities is usually 40 to 80 acres, but this is almost 500 acres that we'll be building for the next 8 to 10 years,” says Logan Martin, Rosemount City administrator. With a median sales price of $425,000, prices can range from as low as $100,000 for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of $800,000 for a newly constructed six-bedroom traditional. Outliers with more acreage can reach costs upwards of $1.2 million.

Year-round activities and community gatherings at Central Park

Rosemount has 30 neighborhood parks, all of which offer various seasonal activities throughout the year. “We strive to say that everybody has a park within a 10-minute walk of their home, depending on where you live in town, and probably a lot shorter in most cases,” says Martin. Rosemount experiences mild summers and cold winters, with an average of 45 inches of snowfall per year. Central Park is the primary gathering space for residents, located near City Hall downtown. It features a mulched playground, picnic tables and a splash pad that's functional during the warmer months. The Rosemount Community Center is located along South Robert Trail, and is home to an auditorium, a gymnasium and meeting rooms available for public use. Schwarz Pond Park is located in west Rosemount, and offers 60 acres of greenery, miles of walking trails and a fishing pond. The Rosemount Skate Park is also here and offers skaters a brand-new state-of-the-art space with poured concrete bowls. In the winter, the city maintains three outdoor ice rinks, which offer public-skating hours and scheduled practice times for the Rosemount Area Hockey Association.

Local events and the annual Leprechaun Days

In July, residents attend the annual Leprechaun Days summer festival at Central Park. The festival, which originally started as a series of sidewalk sales in the early '50s, now spans 8 days and takes its name from the community's Irish heritage. “It may be a two-weekend celebration that is very much a classic city festival, but prep and excitement for the event lasts all year,” says Eaton. The event features live music performances, a fishing derby, fireworks and a parade going east from 145th Street until Cameo Avenue. For fresh produce, residents can visit the seasonal St. Paul Farmers’ Market at the Rosemount Community Center. It’s open six days a week and is hosted by the St. Paul Growers’ Association, which is composed of local vendors from across five counties.

Eastside grocers and local eateries

Most residents shop on the east side of Rosemount, which features big-box grocery stores and markets along 150th Street. Local boutiques like The Guitar Shop and Rosemount Floral contribute to the city’s neighborly atmosphere. Downtown Rosemount is continually expanding and features a mix of fast-food chains and family-owned eateries along South Robert Trail. “We’ve focused redevelopment downtown, working towards making it a vibrant place to hang out,” says Martin. Dining options include Morning Glory’s Bakery Cafe, for breakfast pastries and caffeinated beverages, or Fireside, where families can dine while watching their kids skate on the indoor ice rink. For a nightcap, North 20 Brewing is one of the popular options, well-liked for its in-house kitchen/menu and its dog-friendly vibes.

Education at District 196 Schools

Families in Rosemount are zoned for the Independent School District (ISD) 196, also known as the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan District. “One of our biggest draws in Rosemount is District 196. It’s become the third-largest school district in Minnesota and is nationally recognized as top-shelf,” says Martin. This is reaffirmed by the district's A rating from the review site, Niche. Students may attend one of four elementary schools before heading to Rosemount Middle or Rosemount High, all within the city limits. Rosemount High is ranked Minnesota's 16th-best public high school by Niche and also earns an A rating from the site. The school’s marching band is a powerhouse known for performing in such events as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rose Bowl Parade. Private school options like First Baptist School and The Church of St. Joseph Catholic School are additional options here. Construction of a new elementary school and a middle school revitalization are underway thanks to a $500 million referendum passed by voters in 2023. Those interested in pursuing higher education opportunities can plan to attend the Dakota County Technical College or the University of Minnesota-Park Campus nearby.

Daily commutes and express trips into Minneapolis

South Robert Trail runs through downtown Rosemount, connecting residents to 145th Street and the city's east side. It’s a fairly walkable city with many destinations located within an easy walk or bike ride away. Public transportation options are provided by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority, offering express trips into Minneapolis from the Burnley Avenue Park & Ride Station. When traveling outside the community, the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is 15 miles away. For healthcare, the M Health Fairview Clinic provides primary care within the city.

Crime

On average, Rosemount experiences lower crime rates than Minneapolis. In 2023, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office which oversees Rosemount reported 20 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Comparatively, Hennepin County, which includes Minneapolis, reported 124 violent crimes per 100,000 individuals.
