A charming Long Island village a rustic town center and historic homes
Crowned by a historic grist mill built between 1715 and 1741 and visited by George Washington, Roslyn's quaint, walkable downtown is brimming with contemporary businesses and historic buildings. The Long Island village is only 0.6 square miles, yet it's home to two historic districts that echo the community's history. But it's the community togetherness that leads so many people to fall in love with this quaint village. Residents look out for each other, and community members step up when tragedy strikes. When a well-known community member fell ill with a rare disease, the community got together to provide help and comfort, says Joyce Styne, director of sales and marketing at Laffey International Realty. "All the women got together, whether they knew her or not. Someone organized it, and everyone sent food," Styne says. "People just don't do that anymore. This only happens in small villages. And Roslyn has that small-town mentality, but its complexion is very multi-faceted. It's an amazing area."

Historic Victorians mix with mid-century split levels at million-dollar price tags
Roslyn has several historic homes, most built in the mid-1800s and early 1900s. Common housing styles include traditional colonials, but Stick Victorian and national-style homes are also relatively common. "The actual uniqueness of Roslyn, its top characteristic, is its charm," Styne says. "There are charming older homes that have been renovated." For potential homebuyers who don't want an older house, there are also plenty of mid-century split-levels and ranch-style homes in the community. Some homes surround the community's two lakes, providing waterfront views. In addition to the town's many single-family homes, there's a newer collection of townhouses called Roslyn Landing. According to Styne, homes in Roslyn occasionally sell for around $700,000, but this is rare. Potential homebuyers can expect to find homes between $800,000 to $2 million, sometimes more. "I just sold an amazing home in Roslyn; you're lucky if once in a lifetime you can have it as a listing, and I had it twice," Styne says.

Exploring the storefronts and restaurants along Old Northern Boulevard
"People can think they're in the city, order in, take walks to the restaurant, and yet there's a small-town country feel," Styne says. "It has almost like a New England look in the immediate heart of the town of Roslyn." In Roslyn's town center, along Old Northern Boulevard, is a charming collection of little boutiques and restaurants, among a few other small businesses. Residents enjoy Hendrick's Tavern for dinner. The tavern occupies a historic home, built in 1740, and was turned into an upscale pub that serves various prime steak and seafood dishes. Gatsby's Landing overlooks Rosyln Pond with "The Great Gatsby" theme. The restaurant has an elevated, farm-fresh menu with short rib, branzino, crab cakes and plenty more. Locals also enjoy weekend brunch at Thyme, thrifting at The Junior League of Long Island or a sweet treat at YOLO Yogurt and Desserts. The Harbourview Shoppes is a small, tucked-away plaza with a few restaurants and businesses, like Besito Mexican Restaurant and Bella Luna Hair Salon.
