View the river in Little Pocket, Sacramento Ca.
Small suburban community on the banks of the Sacramento River
Cradled by the Sacramento River and bordered by Interstate 5, the aptly named Little Pocket feels like a secluded oasis for its residents. With only a few entry and exit points about 5 miles south of downtown, locals enjoy strolling the peaceful residential streets and gathering for the Fourth of July at Bahnfleth Park. The neighborhood's quiet nature is exemplified by a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, compared to a national score of 4. Residents on the riverbanks enjoy waterfront activities like kayaking or swimming on hot summer days. Though the neighborhood is primarily residential, a small hotel and some apartment complexes are on the north side. Scott’s Seafood, an upscale restaurant housed in a small hotel, is within walking distance for most residents. Locals don’t need to leave the community for much beyond grocery stores, which are within a few miles.
Midcentury ranch-style homes and apartment complexes
Little Pocket’s three- and four-bedroom midcentury ranch-style homes date back to the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, often featuring low-slung hipped roofs and stone chimneys. “Some houses have river access and good-sized lots, and the older homes have been renovated,” says Nicki Kalteis, local real estate agent with Coldwell Banker. Those with river access may have private docks, while some homeowners farther inland have opted for private backyard pools. Despite consistent high demand, prices range widely from $500,000 to $1 million, depending on square footage, lot size, and if the home has river access. Flat, manicured front lawns are sometimes dotted with mature oak trees, and even though some streets lack sidewalks, locals still stroll along quiet roads, greeting neighbors as they pass. Most residents own their homes, though some apartment complexes are towards the north.
Career-focused programs at John F. Kennedy High
Cabrillo Elementary, rated C-plus by Niche, participates in the Sacramento City Unified School District’s Elementary Sports Program, making basketball and football programs available for fourth through sixth graders. The C-plus-rated Sam Brannan Middle School offers an elective anime class, where students learn to draw and analyze comics through the lens of Japanese history and culture. The B-plus-rated John F. Kennedy High School has a manufacturing and design program that teaches students about product design and entrepreneurship, and a Zero-Emissions Automotive Pathway that's geared towards careers in emerging green technology, with a focus on transportation.
Getting to downtown Sacramento on I-5
Little Pocket is bordered east by Interstate 5, which leads 5 miles north to downtown Sacramento. I-5 also forms a distinct boundary with only a few entry or exit points, which limits neighborhood traffic and encourages locals and kids to stroll freely along residential streets. Riverside Boulevard is the main road in and out of the neighborhood, lined with wide bike lanes and Sacramento Regional Transit bus stops. The UC Davis Medical Center is 7 miles away, Sacramento International Airport is 15 miles away.

Bahnfleth Park and limited access to the waterfront
The 6-acre Bahnfleth Park is at the heart of Little Pocket, featuring wide open grassy fields often used for picnics and pick-up soccer games. Though mostly unshaded, mature oak and sycamore trees border the park around the edges. Access to Chicory Bend Park, set on the banks of the Sacramento River, has been long contested within the city. Once a public park, the open space is now mostly private, with access limited to about 40 residents who live adjacent to the park. Other visitors can still access the park from the river via boat, but many continue to advocate for renewed public access from the levee side. Those with river access enjoy popular hobbies like kayaking, jet skiing and salmon fishing. Other residents can go for a swim and cool off at the Park Terrace Swimming & Tennis Club, which is on the east side of the highway. The Sacramento Yacht Club is just north, on the other side of the river.
Eating out within the community at Scott’s Seafood
Set within a small hotel on the neighborhood’s north edge, Scott’s Seafood on the River is an extremely popular restaurant with locals, who can walk there from their homes for scenic views of the river from the outdoor patio and an upscale night out. One of Scott's most well-known dishes is the Tower, an extravagant array of hot and cold shellfish big enough to share. Also in the neighborhood, Kobasic’s Candies is a locally owned shop run by 3rd and 4th generation chocolate and candy makers. “The kids love to get together, grab their quarters and ride their bikes down there,” says Sam Allen, Little Pocket resident, local broker and owner of Grounded Real Estate. “Sometimes they’ll even sell it to the kids at a discount, like a dollar a piece.” Several grocery stores are within a few miles of Little Pocket, including Sprouts Famers Market, a chain supermarket specializing in organic products, and Shun Fat Supermarket, a specialty store selling Asian imports. More dining options can be found east on Freeport Boulevard, including the Izakaya, which serves ramen, sushi and other Japanese dishes.
Neighborhood get-togethers on the Fourth of July
Though Little Pocket doesn’t have large festivals or city-wide events, the community likes to come together informally and sometimes organizes get-togethers through a private Facebook group. “On the Fourth of July, all the neighbors come out to Bahnfleth Park and set up free cotton candy, face painting and games,” Allen says. “The kids decorate their bikes and have a parade, and if you have a classic car, you can bring that out. It’s just super americana-feeling.”
