Fostering a sense of community
Houghton Jones, a small neighborhood located next to Interstate 675 in Saginaw, aims to foster a sense of community through its neighborhood association. “Our motto is to encourage the community to take care of itself and foster a sense of community while doing so,” says Janelle Harold, office and building manager at the Houghton Jones Neighborhood Association. “We do food drives and summer camps while offering a mini-pantry available 24/7 for anyone in the community who needs something.”
Operating out of the Christina Jones Resource Center, the organization aims to help families develop as part of the community by offering afterschool programs and community gardens. “We are a strong community focused on returning to being a community,” Harold says. We want more families because we have a large senior population, and I believe we can get there.” In addition to these community offerings, the neighborhood features generational restaurants and places of worship spanning across many denominations that are walkable for many residents.
Residents of Houghton Jones enjoy a quiet neighborhood.

Homes in need of renovation
Homes sit behind sidewalks and small front yards, with gravel drives and dirt patches providing off-street parking. Small cross streets lead past early 20th-century single-family homes, many in need of renovation, as Justin Ferullo, real estate agent at Keller Williams Preferred Saginaw, notes. “There are some solid homes in this neighborhood, but it can be hit or miss in terms of the homes. Most will need a touch-up if I’m being honest.” A mix of housing styles, including ranch-style homes, sell for between $10,000 and $60,000. Homes with updates and completed renovations sell for upwards of $100,000.

Youth residents can also contribute to the garden as part of the ‘Learn and Earn’ summer program.”
