St Charles’ quiet northeast corner
Northeast St. Charles ups the ante on space and privacy in a Chicagoland suburb that is already relatively set apart from the crowd, what with being 43 miles from downtown Chicago in a quiet riverfront setting. “Being near the Fox River is really a great draw to Saint Charles,” says Christine Currey of The Currey Koertgen Team with RE/MAX All Pro. “It’s really beautiful and adds a sense of calm to the community.” Most homes here are within peaceful subdivisions, lending to cul-de-sac living while having nearby parks, nightlife and culture just a few miles away.
Home prices range from $300,000 to $850,000 in the Northeast St. Charles area.

From Hunt Club to Stuart’s Crossing
Colonial influences dominate the elegant landscape in communities like Hunt Club and Aintree on St. Charles’ northeast side, while he Tudor-style estates on Persimmon Drive look straight out of a storybook under a dense canopy of mature trees. Professional landscaping is often part of the package here, with pristine lawns traced by sidewalks complimenting the brink and stone facades. Even if residents aren’t right on the riverbanks, they may still access waterfront views as some subdivisions make use of the large ponds scattered throughout St. Charles. These can also be found in the more tight-knit areas of split-level homes and townhouses in subdivisions like Stuart’s Crossing, where residents roll up to two-car garages before crossing paths with their neighbor on the shared front door walkway. Low-to-midrise condominiums sit closer to the center of town. These options range anywhere from $150,000 to $400,000, while larger homes afford $475,000 to $800,000 price tags.

St. Charles Community Unit School District No. 303
Kids in northeast St. Charles attend schools that are a short walk or drive from home. They spend their early years under the arches of Norton Creek Elementary School before graduating to Wredling Middle School and finishing strong at Saint Charles East High School, the older counterpart to St. Charles North High School across the waterway. All three schools receive a grade of A from Niche. The Fighting Saints compete in 29 youth sports in the Dukane Conference, and the school also hosts an award-winning Science Olympiad team and six performing bands. Students can take classes like jazz band and choir as electives during the day.

Tree-shaded walks and boating at Pottawatomie Park
Many northeast residents are already privy to ample green space in their own backyards, but some are even on the outskirts of meticulously maintained parks served by the St. Charles Park District. Pottawatomie Park is a popular greenspace that bumps up against the river, with casual walking trails along the water’s edge passing a grand standout at the water’s edge: the St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboat, a cruise ship offering daytime and night floats. The park is also home to miniature and full-scale golf facilities, baseball fields, sand volleyball courts and more. Meanwhile, St. Charles Country Club and Royal Fox Country Club provide a private sports complex that includes golf, swimming and other recreational activities. More waterlogged fun awaits across the river with Otter Cove Aquatic Center’s towering tube slides, splash pads and wading pools open after Memorial Day.

Italian dining and boutique shopping in downtown St. Charles
St. Charles self-proclaimed status as “Pride of the Fox” is nowhere more apparent than its waterfront downtown stretch, which northeast St. Charles residents are blocks away from. “The locally owned restaurants and shops reflect the soul of the community,” says Currey, “and that’s why the residents support them whenever they can.” The glow of busy restaurant interiors shimmers on the waterway well into the evening as locals and tourists alike enjoy the scenery with good company. Downtown is notably home to several well-loved Italian eateries—from the candle-lit and romantic atmosphere at Mio Modo to the cozy, yet sophisticated La Zaza Trattoria—as well as high-rates spots for brunch and drinks. Circa Vintage Gallery's historic house setting is a gateway to exploring antique jewelry, art and more, while Boutique Baby curates a fashion-forward collection for a (much) younger crowd.
Once Main Street merges with Illinois 64, offerings dwindle to major retailers and big-box stores. Jewel-Osco, Walmart Supercenter, T.J. Maxx and Von Maur sit on this side of the Fox River alongside beloved chains like Portillos and Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant.

From Sculptures in the Park to Holiday homecoming
St. Charles’ full calendar of events gives residents a chance to explore the other parks and recreation spaces in their city. Music floats from the pavilion at Lincoln Park from May to August during Concerts in the Park, while Sculptures in the Park decorate Mt. St. Mary Park from June to August. Folks cheer on their loved ones at the Fox Valley Marathon, a Boston qualifier, and families convene downtown for Holiday Homecoming at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Arcada Theatre hosts national acts throughout the year alongside a full bar.

Getting around from northeast St. Charles
Another factor contributing to tranquil residential streets in northeast St. Charlies is a stark lack of highway activity. Besides Main Street running east to west and 5th Avenue running north to south on this side of the Fox, residents must drive about 17 miles to reach Interstates 355, 290, and 88. Despite this fact, car travel is the fastest and often only way to get around from the city and residents must drive to reach the nearest Metra, the Geneva station on the Union Pacific-West line. Downtown Chicago is a about 43 miles away, while Chicago O’hare International Airport is closer at 34 miles away—though some residents on business may fly into DuPage Airport Authority, directly on the outskirts of the neighborhood. As for medical care, Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital sits 3.5 miles southwest in nearby Geneva.
St. Charles was established since 1834.

St. Charles: Spread out and set apart
Extra space to move affords both benefits and drawbacks in St. Charles. The combination of limited main roads within the city, and a greater distance to a major highway can mean longer, traffic-fraught commute times.
