Within minutes of downtown St. Louis, the residents of Compton Heights enjoy a reserved living atmosphere and suburban surroundings despite a close proximity to the state’s biggest metropolitan area. “Compton Heights itself is a greater part of what’s essentially south St. Louis,” says Emily Booker, a Realtor with Garcia Properties in the area. “It’s a wealthy neighborhood and doesn’t have much traffic, so it’s very quiet, and when people think of Compton Heights it’s primarily the area of homes between Longfellow and Hawthorne Boulevards.”

Compton Heights’ selection of homes make it a sought-after spot in the St. Louis area. “It’s sort of a crown jewel neighborhood,” Booker says. “There’s huge mansions, but for what they are someone can get a truly beautiful mansion home for an affordable cost. It’s all residential, with mostly large homes over around 4,000 square feet.” Prices typically range anywhere from close to $600,000 to around $1.4 million for these homes, primarily constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Colonial and Victorian designs are common, as is red brick in terms of materials along with occasional brown-brick homes. “It’s known for its large lots despite being in the middle of the city,” Booker says.

Schools within Compton Heights’ vicinity
Shenandoah Elementary School is just across the southern boundary of Compton Heights, the neighborhood falling within the Saint Louis Public Schools district despite having none within its area. Shenandoah, which receives a grade of C-minus from Niche, then gives way to the Long Middle Community Education Center, just 10 minutes or so to the southwest and also scoring a C-minus. Roosevelt High School hosts grades nine through 12, and the educational institution named for the country’s 26th president receives a C-minus on Niche while offering athletics like football, baseball, cheerleading and softball.

An iconic water tower rising above the trees
Compton Hill Reservoir Park makes up the northeastern quadrant of Compton Heights, standing as the only park within the boundaries of the neighborhood. Trails crisscross through wooded greenery on the east and west sides of the park, while the reservoir itself takes up the middle portion. Visitors can find a historic landmark amidst the trees, though, in the Compton Hill Water Tower. Standing more than 150 feet tall, the water tower was built in 1898 and is a popular site for visitors to climb and look out over the surrounding area. Its castle-esque appearance gives additional character to the park, which also features a dog park and playground.

Local flavor hubs
Compton Heights is largely residential, so there are few restaurants or shops within its boundaries, but residents don’t have to go far to find them. Its closeness to St. Louis means many of Missiouri’s largest metropolitan area’s amenities are a short distance away. St. Louis’ south side is dotted with familiar chain restaurants and unique local spots. “The Shaved Duck Smokehouse is amazing,” Booker says. “There’s some good bars and Lona’s Lil’ Eats has been there for a long time.” Crafted is another local staple, located at the corner of Shenandoah and South Compton Avenues.

Nationally-regarded attractions, plus baseball and theater
Three major landmarks are located close to Compton Heights, appealing to a wide variety of interests, with both Busch Stadium and the Gateway Arch National Park near the Mississippi River and boundary between Missouri and Illinois. Sightseers can ascent the 630-foot-tall steel monument or catch a St. Louis Cardinals game, perhaps to see them take on the rival Chicago Cubs from across the state line. Nearly 100 years old, the Fabulous Fox Theatre is the home of many performing arts and has been the site of many significant events, from an appearance in John Carpenter’s 1981 film “Escape from New York” to a birthday concert for area native Chuck Berry.

Straight out of Compton Heights
The tri-state arc of Interstate 44 concludes close to St. Louis, with a portion of the highway making up the northern border of Compton Heights. Beginning in Texas and crossing through Oklahoma before running through much of Missouri, also cutting through Joplin and near Oklahoma City. It’s not a necessary thoroughfare for residents who just want to get to downtown St. Louis, though. “People can basically walk to downtown,” Booker says. “Compton Heights is less than 10 minutes from Busch Stadium and the Fabulous Fox Theatre, and residents can even bike downtown.
