It's only appropriate that the story of Fountain Park should intertwine with the fountain at its center. Made from cast iron, the fountain was placed in the center of its namesake park in 1889, but years of exposure to the elements left it corroded. After extensive repairs in the 1960s, the fountain, along with the park it sits in, was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the homes surrounding the park also have a regal, Victorian feel from their construction in the late 1800s. Like the fountain itself, however, many homes were not maintained well enough to stand up to the passage of time. Today, roughly 17% of the neighborhood’s buildings sit vacant. Residents like Deidre Lewis, however, who is a broker with DL Realty and has renovated a house in Fountain Park, know that homes can be restored. “I could stand back and look at the house with pride. I can say I contributed and did my part for the neighborhood.”

Victorian homes with renovation potential
Most homes in Fountain Park were built from around 1890 to 1915 and feature a mix of Craftsman and Victorian homes. Fountain Avenue is lined with large American Foursquares made with brick construction, while shotgun builds and Classical Revival townhouses can be found on the neighborhood's side streets. Despite unique features like bay windows and rounded turrets, a portion of the neighborhood's homes are abandoned and in disrepair. Lewis says the market potential is clear when looking just beyond Fountain Park’s boundaries. Less than a mile south, four-bedroom homes command price tags in the $500,000s, but most homes in Fountain Park sell from about under $50,000 to just over $250,000. Lewis adds that getting a loan can make renovations a difficult process but that the neighborhood's unique architecture makes it worth it. "The housing stock in that area is amazing. There’s a character in the homes you can’t find today," Lewis says. Fountain Park CAP Index Crime Score is a 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. Its violent crime scores all rank higher than the national average, according to the CAP Index.
