A growing community in North St. Louis
Because Hyde Park started as a small town called Bremen, the neighborhood maintains an interconnected feel that dates back to the mid-1800s. Though the fluctuation in Hyde Park’s population after World War II left behind many vacant homes throughout the community, groups like the St. Louis Vacancy Collaborative are working to renovate buildings and allow the historical houses to offer a glimpse into the past while moving the neighborhood to the future.
Historical homes and community preservation in Hyde Park
Only blocks from the Mississippi River, Hyde Park comprises Victorian-style architecture and Second Empire-style row houses. While shrubbery and well-maintained grass line the sidewalks near occupied homes, windows and doors covered with plywood remain a familiar sight—an aspect of the community that residents intend to change. “We went out in the neighborhood and engaged our residents to see what we could do to facilitate preserving the character of the neighborhood,” explains Fatimah Muhammad, founder of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. “We developed a committee that specifically focuses on nuisance and vacant properties.” While houses needing restoration begin around $20,000, turnkey homes can cost up to $380,000.

The variety of stores in the area I live in is horrible. There are mainly convenient stores. The actual grocery stores in the area has been closed, so If you want to shop, you have to travel to the other side of town.

The grocery stores are okay. I wish the fresh produce and more organic foods were more affordable.
