Less than a mile from St. Louis’s downtown, LaSalle Park balances modern convenience and historical charm. With glimpses of its 19th-century roots in its architecture and design, the neighborhood maintains a cozy atmosphere that makes it easy to forget its proximity to big-city amenities. The neighborhood itself is mostly residential, with a smattering of restaurants and industry of its own. It’s also the long-time home to the Nestlé Purina Petcare Company, a major employer in the area. Despite the accessibility to so many conveniences, “It’s almost an island unto itself within the city of St. Louis,” says Tim Weber, owner of Old Rock House, a music venue that has served the LaSalle Park community for about 20 years.

French-influenced architecture
Townhouses and condos comprise most of the neighborhood’s housing, with French influence playing a significant role in the architecture. Cars often park in alleyways and backyards, alleviating congestion on the narrow residential streets. With carefully maintained brick sidewalks and median construction dating years back to 1890, LaSalle Park retains its historical feel. One-bedroom condos start around $150,000, while larger units with extensive renovations may exceed $600,000. Because Interstates 44 and 55 run along the east side of the community, homes closer to South Broadway come with more noise than those farther west. Buildings between the highway and the river are primarily storage and industrial buildings, so most houses are distanced from areas with high flood risk.
LaSalle Park, previously known as Frenchtown, has maintained its French influence to this day.

Enjoy a show at Old Rock House
Old Rock House, named after the building that once stood where the Gateway Arch now towers over the Mississippi, hosts everything from classic rock tribute bands to southern rappers. Though a music hall, Old Rock House epitomizes the connected nature of the community. “LaSalle Park is a very small, close-knit neighborhood to the point where when we do outdoor concerts on occasion, we actually reach out to the neighbors themselves and let them know when the event is and what the times are, to make sure we’re not making noise and surprising them,” Weber says. “They’ve always been very receptive and supportive of us.”

Crime in LaSalle Park
LaSalle’s CAP Index crime risk score is 9, which is higher than the national score of 4. “It gets kind of a bad rap for crime and stuff like that, but the reality is that it’s a small city, and because of that, it’s neighborly,” Weber says. “You do get the people that know each other and support each other.”
