On the city's edge

Once undeveloped farmland, St. Louis Hills was one of the last neighborhoods carved from the Missouri city's countryside. In fact, it’s right at the edge of St. Louis’ 1876 border. Today, it’s among the most affluent communities in the Mound City. The highly desirable area draws residents with early 20th-century homes and easy access to several retail and dining districts, including two on nearby Chippewa Street and Hampton Avenue.

Quirky murals and frozen treats

On Hampton Avenue, a cow, a pig and a chicken reach for a bottle of booze. The locally loved mural is on the side of Salt + Smoke, a barbecue restaurant that puts its own spin on classic St. Louis dishes. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard has been part of the neighborhood since the 1940s. The white wooden shack often has lines of patrons just waiting for a taste of the old-fashioned treat. There's also a Target where Chippewa Street and Hampton Avenue intersect, making finding everyday essentials effortless.

Tudor homes on a competitive market

Most homes in St. Louis Hills were constructed between the 1930s and the 1950s, but they tend to look older, thanks to their designs. Tudor homes from the ‘40s are well-maintained, with dark brown timbering, stone archways, and manicured ivy adding to the houses’ old-world feel. Century-old brick duplexes mimic the Georgian-inspired architecture typical of St. Louis’s 1700s founding. Once residents live here, they tend to stay, as evidenced by the fact there are often only one or two homes on the market at any one time. The neighborhood is so desirable that Christopher Thiemet, a Circa Properties broker with almost 20 years of experience, says he recently had a client who lived in a neighboring community but had still searched for a home in St. Louis Hills for three years. “They’re moving one block over. It’s the same ZIP code, but they just want to be on the St. Louis Hills side of Hampton Avenue.” Prices range from $140,000 for a home needing renovation to $520,000 for a three-bedroom 1950s ranch-style house.

Gardens for sculptures and local beer

Francis Park is planted in the center of the neighborhood, so it’s accessible for any resident who wants a game on one of the four pickleball courts. Locals also frequently tour its collection of funky sculptures. Each year, 10,000 people head to the park’s lily pond to browse the artisan booths during Art in the Park. Live music and food vendors also are part of the free festival. Of course, food is found in the park year-round, thanks to the Rockwell Beer Garden. The stone cottage boasts 18 locally brewed beers and a covered outdoor seating area with picnic tables under strings of amber lights.

Short commutes throughout St. Louis

Located at the edge of the city, St. Louis Hills is just 10 miles from downtown. Getting there or to other parts of St. Louis is made more accessible, thanks to major roadways like Interstates 40, 44 and 55. Residents without cars can reach their destinations using one of several bus routes operating in the community. Biking is popular in the area, as is walking along the numerous sidewalks.

Science programs, tutoring and after-school activities

To the east of the neighborhood is Buder Elementary School, a participant in the Urban Systemic Initiative, a National Science Foundation-backed program to beef up schools’ math and science curriculums and improve student performance. As students in St. Louis Hills get older, they attend Long Middle and Roosevelt High, which are less than 4 miles away. Long Middle hosts a tutoring and enrichment program in conjunction with the Trio program at Saint Louis University. At the same time, Roosevelt High has more than two dozen sports teams and extracurricular activities. All three schools have earned a C-minus ranking from Niche.
