St. Louis Place is a community in transition

St. Louis Place has seen its fair share of changes throughout its 170-year history, and with the new National Geospatial Intelligence headquarters slated to open in 2026, it’s about to see a whole new wave of development. “It’s going to upgrade the community, but it may present some problems,” says Calvin Riley, who founded the local George B. Vashon Museum 12 years ago. “We don’t know what’s coming, but we’re hoping they’re going to take care of the residents and the businesses that are currently here,” he says. Located about 2 miles from downtown St. Louis and beside the former site of Pruitt-Igoe, one of the nation’s largest failed housing projects, St. Louis Place has struggled with blight and crime over the years but has retained much of its rich historical character in the form of museums like Riley’s and the Griot Museum of Black History. Local festivals honor the area’s cultural lineage, and Riley says it’s a strong community where “everybody knows each other.” Change may be on the horizon, but St. Louis Place locals will work hard to remain a close-knit neighborhood where commercial convenience can coexist with the community’s vibrant history.

Adding new builds to historic housing stock

St. Louis Place is a renter-heavy neighborhood, sparsely dotted with a mix of historical homes and modern builds. Current prices, which average under $130,000, are a product of a few undesirable factors, including a CAP Index overall crime score of 8 out of 10 and a high number of unoccupied or poorly maintained properties. But as the new NGA West Campus springs to life, the neighborhood may see some big transformations. “It’s going to jumpstart renovation, restoration and new construction in St. Louis Place. I’m working with a developer who is coming up with new construction that’s energy efficient. We’re talking about prices in the upper $300,000s,” says Sandra Dew-Gainey, CEO of New Day Realty. While the community aims to preserve historical Victorian and Second Empire architecture, there are plenty of vacant lots to build on, and the mayor hopes to increase the area’s commercial and retail offerings as well.

Accessible parks for year-round recreation

Spanning more than 14 acres in the center of the neighborhood, St. Louis Place Park offers a walkable respite with grass-bordered paths meandering around a basketball court, playground and splash pad. The park stretches across St. Louis Avenue, making it accessible from any corner of the community. With a short, 1-mile walk, residents can soak up sunshine at the Fairground Park pool or spend an afternoon fishing by the lake. At 1,300 acres, Forest Park is one of the city’s largest recreation spaces, delighting visitors with a zoo, multiple art and history museums, a theater, a golf course and endless outdoor activities.

Community spirit thrives in St. Louis

In summer, the community comes together to honor Black culture and history at the St. Louis African American Artifacts Festival and Bazaar, hosted at the Crown Square Plaza on St. Louis Avenue. Nearby Fairground Park is the site of an annual Juneteenth celebration, while Forest Park accommodates annual citywide celebrations such as the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, the fall Evolution Festival and The Great Forest Park Balloon Glow and Race, billed as one of the oldest hot air balloon races in the world. Even more events take place throughout the year in downtown St. Louis, from food and film festivals to cultural parades and artistic showcases.

Nostalgic shops and downtown dining

Honoring the historic side of Old North St. Louis, Crown Candy Kitchen maintains its early 1900s aesthetic with a retro soda fountain and a jukebox complementing its homemade treats. But despite its proximity to downtown, there are few other walkable options besides fast food, making St. Louis Place a bit of a food desert. North Florissant Avenue is home to a few local businesses and a Family Dollar, as well as the @ Monroe restaurant, an industrial-style diner with unique swinging bar stools. The closest grocer, GreenLeaf Market, sits a bit farther south, and more options are available throughout the downtown area.
