Quiet suburbia in northeast St. Louis County
Spanish Lake is a large, quiet suburb in northeast St. Louis County with about 18,000 residents. Although Spanish and German settlers lived here in the 18th and 19th centuries, they moved on, leaving a few historic churches and buildings behind. Housing demand after WWII sparked the development of several thousand new homes in the area. Today, there are about 7,700 homes and 18,000 residents. Homes are moderately priced and a majority are owner-occupied. Home styles include small to mid-sized ranch-style homes, Colonial-Revival homes, a few Cape-Cods and a handful of Tudor-inspired homes as well. Despite the number of homes in Spanish Lake and surrounding neighborhoods, it still evokes a sense of ruralness, as there are several farms and undeveloped acreage in and around the area. At the same time, residents can easily access schools, shopping, dining and parks right inside the neighborhood. Notably, The St. Louis Zoo makes its home inside Spanish Lake.
Spanish Lake thrives with a mix of homeowners and home styles. Steven Studnicki, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and a real estate agent for nearly 30 years describes its appeal, “Homes in Spanish Lake sell well because they’re affordably priced, in relation to other nearby neighborhoods. Buyers also like that they’re getting the most square feet for the price, which is desirable for growing families.”
