A north side neighborhood with affordable prices
When the rushing Interstate 70 cut Walnut Park West off from the rest of the city in the 1960s, it lost a lot of city support. The neighborhood has since struggled with vacant properties and a lack of resources. However, it benefits from the support of active local organizations, a well-maintained city park and a library. About half of the population are renters, and Walnut Park West has one of the lowest costs of living in St. Louis, according to Niche. Chris Burns, broker with Landmark Realty Partners, who has owned property in Walnut Park West, says, “One of the main reasons people move there is because of the affordability.”

Free meals at the library, sports at the local park
The Walnut Park Branch of the St. Louis Public Library is less than a mile away from most homes in Walnut Park West. In addition to books, the library has a computer and hotspot distribution program to help families with limited access to technology. The library also offers after-school activities and free meals to all kids under 18. “As soon as they get out of school, they come here to meet up with friends, eat their snacks, play cards — this is a safe place for kids and teens to be,” says Raven Washington, a circulation assistant at the library. “I feel like the library helps the community by giving kids something productive to do.”
Walnut Park West borders Gregory J. Carter Park, which has tennis and basketball courts, a playground and a walking track. The park is well-maintained by the city and is a go-to spot for local city officials looking to host community events in the Walnut Park area. Bungalows and cottages with back-alley parking
The grid-patterned streets of Walnut Park West haven’t seen much modern construction. Vintage bungalows, Cape Cods and Tudors from the 1920s and 30s are interspersed with ranch styles from the 1940s and 50s. Prices here are some of the most affordable in the city and largely depend on the quality of renovations. Fixer-uppers start around $20,000, and newly renovated properties get up to $125,000. Most homes are situated a few feet from each other on narrow plots of grass. There is back alleyway access for parking, though street parking is also fairly common. The homes along Lucille, Garesche and Lalite have gates on one side of the road, preventing noisy through traffic. Although St. Louis has experienced significant flooding, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District designates Walnut Park West as a low-risk zone.
