Home to the World's Fair
The neighborhood of Wydown Skinker is built on the grounds of the World’s Fair held in St. Louis in 1904. The streets of Wy continue seamlessly into the city of Clayton, which marks the end of the city of St. Louis, and the beginning of St. Louis County. Perched between the city and the county, the neighborhood is primarily residential, and its placement provides a mixed urban and suburban feeling. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s, when Wydown Skinker grew alongside the city of Clayton. “Wydown Skinker bridges some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in St. Louis,” says life-long resident and RE/MAX Results Realtor Mary Krummenacher. With eight local colleges and universities and two major hospitals nearby, it’s no wonder nearly 50% of the houses in the community are rented. “It’s a large blend of transplants, students, professionals and families,” says Nicci Vogel of Delhougne Realty Group.

Plenty of options
Toward the center of the neighborhood, you’ll find more multifamily options, including four-story brick and stone apartment and condo buildings and high-rises with gorgeous views of the city and Forest Park below. In the northern and southern ends of the neighborhood, you’ll find some streets lined with spacious single-family homes. Red brick exteriors and terracotta-tiled roofs may be a strange combination, but their use is evidence of St. Louis’s history as a hub for clay mining and brick and tile making. The architectural styles of these homes draw inspiration from colonial, Tudor and craftsman styles, which enjoyed widespread popularity in the 1920s. Housing costs range from $255,000 to $1.2 million. Homes rarely spend more than 30 days on the open market. Vogal says that with all the community has to offer, it’s hard not to be drawn to the neighborhood. “Not many areas in St. Louis have what Wydown Skinker has to offer,” she explains. “You have parks, education, dining establishments and shopping. It’s like a Tribecca.” The drawback — Krummenacher says there isn’t much inventory in the area. Vogel and Krummenacher say that HOA fees can get steep — as much as $1,200 a month.

Wydown Skinker is served by the St. Louis Public School District, which operates 74 schools and serves every neighborhood in the city. However, many parents choose to enroll their students in local private schools, like the Forsythe School, located at the corner of Wydown and Skinker Boulevards, which gives the neighborhood its name. Mason Elementary School has a 12-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and is ranked a C by niche. Wydown Middle School has a 9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and in 2021, the school was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon school. The award is given when student academic achievement measures and progress toward closing achievement gaps. Niche awarded the school an A-plus. Clayton High School, which has a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, is also an A-plus-rated school. As mentioned, the eight local higher education facilities include Washington University in St. Louis and Fontbonne University.
