A global community in Saint Paul
Although this neighborhood's official name is Thomas-Dale, locals affectionately refer to it by the more whimsical name of "Frogtown." This name is speculated to have originated from Archbishop John Ireland, a prominent local Roman Catholic leader around the turn of the 20th century, who allegedly referred to the town as "Froschberg" after hearing a chorus of frogs nearby. The swamps that once defined Frogtown have since been filled in, but the nickname has stuck around. Today, Frogtown is home to a global community of over 15,000 residents, rich in culture and diversity. It is located "smack dab in the middle" of the Twin Cities area, Realtor Melissa Wiegele says. "It's one of those places that's close to everything — in the heart of the city, so very convenient for everyone living there, and you find your own little spots you frequent. The Hmong Market, Xcel Energy Center and zoo are just down the road, and there's a ton of universities, cathedrals and museums nearby."

Multigenerational Southeast Asian families run the majority of these establishments. The restaurants in the area are renowned, serving cuisine from Vietnam, Southwest China, Thailand and Cambodia, among others. One local favorite is Trung Nam Bakery, where residents can pick up crispy banh mi and Vietnamese coffee. Wiegele says, "The food in Frogtown is amazing; there's so many options to choose from." She personally recommends Sana Restaurant, which offers Ethiopian & Mediterranean food, adding, "I don't even have a go-to order there; everything is good!" For groceries and other needs, small local stores such as Dragon Star Oriental Foods, W & T Market and Wung Lee Market are available. For a larger chain, residents can head to Aldi, located at the southwest end of the neighborhood.

Single-story Victorian and bungalow-style homes
Wiegele says that homes here are “relatively affordable with good value,” with prices ranging from $195,000 to $350,000. “The average sale price is around $230,000, so that’s one of the reasons people are drawn to the area,” she explains. Because of Frogtown's proximity to the city center, the majority of residents are renters, making up 62% of the population. The remaining 38% are homeowners. Architectural variants such as Craftsman-style homes, bungalows and Victorians are predominant in the neighborhood. Houses sit closely together, with small modest spaces and detached garages. Neighbors can volunteer on the farm to learn about producing fresh, sustainable food. The Hmongtown Marketplace is another highlight, receiving the nickname "Hmong Mall of America" due to its size. The market is the first Hmong-owned and operated establishment in the U.S., with over 200 vendors today.
