Historic St. Paul neighborhood with a college town feel
Resting on the banks of the Mississippi River, 5 miles west of downtown Saint Paul is Macalester-Groveland. Simply “Mac-Groveland” to locals, this neighborhood is more than its historic district vibe. Macalester College, the University of St. Thomas and nearby St. Catherine University give the community a college town energy. “The colleges are a giant plus for people. They have that cultural element that you don’t get everywhere,” says Julie Glass, a Realtor with Edina Realty, Inc. who grew up just south of the neighborhood in Highland Park. “It’s a generational community. People who grew up here want to stay. They know every street,” Glass says. From the winding streets of Tangletown and Mississippi River Boulevard to the spacious and straight Summit Avenue, Macalester-Groveland is a compendium of architectural styles. Prices range from as low as $200,000 for a quaint bungalow to more than $1 million for a grand Tudor Revival estate.

In this neighborhood, tall pine and oak trees tower over the wide residential streets creating a peaceful atmosphere where residents can walk for blocks on smooth sidewalks, taking in views of the manicured lawns. There’s a sense of pride visible from yard to yard. Buyers here will find classic Tudor homes, eye-catching Spanish Colonial houses, ornate Victorian styles and other custom offerings. “It has that picturesque Hallmark quality with 1920s architecture,” says Michael Korby, a Realtor with Edina Realty, Inc. and Glass’s business partner. Side streets have more modest, though still elegant, houses, from American Foursquares to Craftsman bungalows. Prices range from $200,000 for a home in need of renovation to more than $1 million for a property along Mississippi River Boulevard.

Overall, I am a big fan of living in the neighborhood. I would like to continue to see more mom and pop shops come up around. I adore how walkable my neighborhood is, and how everyone is outside walking when the weather is nice. Its really a special place to be in Saint Paul.
