Modest homes and a hard-working community define this Minnesota suburb
Homes in St. Paul, Minnesota's highly residential North End tell part of its history of hard-working citizens. Featuring a neatly laid network of wide streets, with modest homes nestled among towering trees, this is where explorers, traders, missionaries, farmers and merchants settled and worked. North End is bisected by Rice Street, one of Minnesota’s oldest streets and a former streetcar route. This main commercial corridor runs south toward the Minnesota State Capitol building – creating a dazzling skyline view. With a large nature sanctuary, multiple athletic fields and magnet and creative arts schools, North End residents enjoy a relaxed neighborhood vibe with historic touches just a few miles from downtown St. Paul. “I really don’t want to say it, but it’s kind of boring,” says Anthony Dew, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Integrity Realty Lakes. “It’s a good place to live and a quiet place to raise a family.”

Between the neighborhood association and community organizations, North End residents have plenty of options for staying busy. McDonough Recreation Center on Timberlake Road hosts events, athletics for all ages and after-school programs. It also has a great sledding hill for winter fun. Anglers love stopping by Kathy’s Live Bait on Rice Street for supplies. North End residents also attend the annual Marydale Festival at Marydale Park, which features art, food and music. West of the neighborhood, the Hmong International Freedom Festival held every summer in Como Park. This festival honors the history of Hmong refugees who settled in St. Paul after the Vietnam War.

This St. Paul suburb’s houses tell the stories of their owners
Reflecting more than a century of housing styles, North End includes a mix of 19th-century brick homes, ubiquitous wood-clad post-war bungalows, 1960s ranch-style and contemporary townhouses. But it’s known for its charming, well-preserved historic homes, many dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. New developments are also being added around Willow Reserve by Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. The neighborhood boasts a mix of long-time residents and a growing number of young professionals and families. Single-family homes in the community range from about $200,000 to $355,000.

Parks and natural areas provide residents with habitat species
North End residents have access to spectacular natural areas and parks. Willow Reserve’s over 20 acres of undeveloped land is a critical stopover for birds migrating along the Mississippi River Flyway. Community members maintain the reserve. Heading south across Maryland Avenue, Marydale Park has more than 20 acres of green space and fishing access from the bridge on Loeb Lake. The Trout Brook Nature Sanctuary spans more than 40 acres and is accessible near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Jackson Street. Set in a shallow valley, the stream was once pumped underground to make room for a railroad bed. With the railroad long gone, the nature sanctuary has been restored to its former glory, showing off a meandering streambed and beautiful wetlands.

From fish and chips to Burmese food this suburb has chops
There’s no shortage of dining options in and around North End. In fact, “many people don’t realize there are good restaurants in the area with easy access and hardly any waiting,” says Dew. Local favorites along Rice Street include Tin Cup’s and Hook’s Fish and Chips. Nearby Blues Saloon is a great place to grab a burger and catch live music. The Foundry Pub on Jackson Street is another popular neighborhood bar. One unique aspect of the North End is its significant Burmese population, reflected in the selection of restaurants like Friends Café. For an authentic Burmese experience, try dishes like mohinga (fish noodle soup), lahpet thoke (tea leaf salad)and various curries. Asian markets can also be found along Rice Street, including Double Dragon Foods. For daily essentials and groceries, there’s a Cub in neighboring Roseville. Dew says Karen Thai Food – which specializes in Burmese and Thai cuisine and Mama’s Pizza are both resident favorites for their food as well as their comfort.
