Union Park is one of Saint Paul’s 17 districts, situated on the banks of the Mississippi River near the west side of the city. The district was formed in the early 2000s by merging several smaller neighborhoods. Scott Berger, an attorney and Union Park District Council board member, says, “There are definitely different feels to the neighborhoods within the Union Park district.” Berger: “You’ve got the University of Saint Thomas and Macalester College, residential sections with really historic homes. Then there’s the corner of Selby and Snelling Avenues, which is kind of the business center. And the area north of Interstate 94 is totally different, too, with Allianz Field, Target and affordable housing. It’s not a neighborhood you can describe simply.” Berger notes that because of all the different vibes, Union Park is a good middle ground between urban and suburban living. “I’ve lived in several neighborhoods in Saint Paul, and I was surprised at how quiet Union Park was when I moved in. When there are big Saint Thomas or soccer events, it becomes a lot more vibrant, but it’s temporary. Union Park is somewhere in the middle of having everything going on all the time and nothing going on ever.”

Charming early 20th century homes

Homes here start at around $180,000 for a one-bedroom condo in a converted 1920s-era Prairie-style house, to more than $775,000 for a four-bedroom Greek Revival-style home built in the late 1930s and fully renovated. A palatial Queen Anne built in 1885, with four bedrooms, 10-foot ceilings and a carved wood staircase, sold for more than $1.2 million recently. “In the northeast corner of the neighborhood, there’s also a new affordable housing development going up,” says Berger. “Housing prices in Saint Paul are generally slightly lower than they are in Minneapolis,” says Mary Schumann, a Realtor with Keller Williams Integrity Realty. But the prices aren’t the only thing drawing residents. “We’re going to renovate our house and spend a lot of money on that instead of moving somewhere else,” says Berger. “The neighborhood is in a really transformative time and people are really sticking around. We’re in it for the long haul.”

Year-round recreation

There are several small parks here, and Berger says that Merriam Park is the best-known in the neighborhood. The Merriam Park Recreation Center has everything from after-school programs and rental spaces to youth/adult athletics programs. There’s even a skatepark and a playground between the basketball courts and athletics fields. On the northeast side of Union Park, off Syndicate Street North, there’s Dunning Park, with ball fields, tennis courts, batting cages and a playground. The waterfront Shadow Falls Park offers rustic hiking and biking trails lined with benches. “The river is probably the biggest amenity,” Berger says. “The Twin Cities doesn’t do a very good job of making the river accessible to tourists. It’s more of a nature preserve than a tourist trap. There are a lot of local runners, lots of people biking and walking their dogs along the trails.” Berger says The Town & Country Club has great sledding hills in addition to its 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and swimming pool. Aldine Park, near the interstate, offers a playground, tot lot, picnic areas, fields and a basketball court.

Mom-and-pop shopping and dining

The corner of Snelling and Selby Avenues is a hotspot for dining. “Yum! Kitchen and Bakery has a fantastic reputation as a casual brunch spot,” says Berger. “Neighborhood Café, right next to them, is another favorite. It’s very much a breakfast spot with more of a small business feel.” Berger adds that one of his personal favorite eateries is Firebox BBQ. Lake Monster Brewing, in an industrial area northwest of the neighborhood boundaries, is also popular. “It’s more of a workaday-type dining scene here. We tend to venture over the border for really nice sit-down restaurants.” For everyday essentials, residents head back to Snelling and Selby to find clothing boutiques, gift shops or music, bike and sporting goods stores. There’s even a Whole Foods. Just north of Interstate 94, there’s Target. “We also like to go to Kowalksi’s Market,” he says, referring to a grocery store less than a mile southeast.

Highly rated neighborhood schools

Neighborhood kids are served by the Saint Paul Public Schools system, the second-largest district in the state. Many go to Groveland Park Elementary, Hidden River Middle and Central High School. Groveland Park earns a B-minus from Niche in 2024. Hidden River earns a C-plus and Central High, which offers an International Baccalaureate Programme, scores an A. The high school also offers language immersion programs in French or German. Berger says his own five-year-old just started school at Randolph Heights Elementary, and he's “very impressed with it,” he says. In 2024, Randolph Heights earned a B-plus from Niche. Both the University of St. Thomas and Macalester College are in Union Park, too. “A lot of our neighbors are students. They’re not the predominant population, but it is notable,” says Berger, adding, “St. Thomas is known as a party school, so there are complaints about students being rowdy. But there are overlay districts in our city that restrict how much student housing there can be within a certain area.” Berger says that in comparison, Macalester students are “pretty tame.”

A crossroads close to home

The intersection of Snelling and University Avenues is notoriously busy. “Snelling is a state highway, it pulls the traffic off of Interstate 94 and sends it north and south, making it really easy to get around,” Berger says. The location near a main thoroughfare is part of the reason his family moved here, since his office is in Stillwater, nearly 30 miles north. Berger: “We do have many more options for getting around than most neighborhoods.” There are bike lanes and paths throughout Union Park, too, as well as stops along the Metro Transit bus line. “Bikes are very popular here,” Schumann says. Taking Snelling Avenue south to Summit Avenue, cyclists will find a dedicated bike lane.
