A waterfront St. Pete community close to amenities

Bayou Heights and Shores, or as locals call it, Bayou Shores, offers waterfront views, opportunities to explore the outdoors and urban convenience. “It’s a sweet spot right by the bay,” says Rachel Sears, Realtor with Real Estate For All. On the southern edge of St. Petersburg’s peninsula, the neighborhood rests on Tampa Bay and Little Bayou. It also hugs the eastern edge of Lake Maggiore, making it a popular fishing and boating community. Various parks are within walking distance, and three nature preserves are nearby. The waterfront community is also close to big-city amenities and other attractions, with downtown 4 miles away, making it appealing to snowbirds, commuters and everyone in between. “The fact that it’s right outside of downtown St. Petersburg makes it very attractive,” says Chau Nguyen, a Tampa Bay local and Source Real Estate Broker working in St. Pete. “You’re 15 minutes from the beach to the west, the pier to the north, and you’re sandwiched right in between. If you’re heading over the bridge to Tampa, that’s another 15 to 20 minutes.”

Surrounded by water recreation, parks and preserves

Boating and fishing are the most popular pastimes, with deep-water canals and bayous surrounding the neighborhood, along with the Lake Maggiore to the west. The 360-acre lake has multiple kayak and boat launches and fishing spots. Lake Maggiore Park is on the lake’s eastern side and within walking distance for residents. The banyan tree-shaded park has a playground, small fishing docks and waterfront picnic space. Ann Drakeford Playground and the 245-acre Boyd Hill Nature Preserve are also within walking or biking distance for Bayou Shores residents. The wilderness refuge offers camping and bird watching and has miles of forested hiking trails. There’s also an environmental education center. Little Bayou Preserve is 3 miles away and has paddleboard launches, a small boardwalk for fishing, a forested trail and an observation bridge overlooking the water. It’s also a popular place to spot herons and other birds. Bird Island in neighboring Coquina Key can be viewed from this preserve. Three miles from the neighborhood, Dell Holmes Park is on Lake Maggiore’s western side. It has a splash pad, fishing piers, a playground, hiking trails and a driving range.

Ramblers and coastal bungalows starting in the low-$300,000s

Bayou Shores’ palm and oak-lined wide streets are filled with ranch-style homes and other houses that reflect the sunny Florida vibe. “You’ll find a lot of craftsman bungalows and coastal cottages,” says Nguyen. “A lot of people are living on less. I see newcomers going for three beds and two baths, or even two and two.” Most homes were built in the early 1950s, but some date to the 1920s. Prices range from the low-$300,000s for a 1,200-square-foot three-bedroom to the mid-$800,000s for a 3,000-square-foot four-bedroom home. There are also some newly constructed homes on the water for over $1 million. Those closer to the lake and preserve are on the higher end of the price range. “It’s a very hot market down there around Lake Maggiore,” says Sears. Many residents have in-ground pools, covered front porches and fenced-in backyards. Most homes have multi-car garages or rear garage parking with spacious paved lots for boats or other toys. Lot sizes are large, most averaging a quarter acre, but some close stretch over a half acre. Residents have direct access to Lake Maggiore Park, Ann Drakeford Playground, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and two bayous. A public boat ramp is also within blocks of the neighborhood to the east.

Gyros & Seafood Express is 2 miles north and is popular for fried shrimp, garlic Cajun seafood trays and lamb gyros.
