Disston Heights is a large residential neighborhood in St. Petersburg that provides residents with a quiet lifestyle in a tight-knit community. Neighborhood events include semi-annual “porch parties” and potlucks within the community, allowing residents of Disston Heights many ways to stay connected. The area attracts many medical professionals with the proximity to HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital. Commuters appreciate the several bus stops set up around the area, which helps them get to and from work. Other large employers include Raymond King Financial and Tampa Bay sports teams, according to Brooke Hefte, a Realtor with REMAX Metro, who has lived in the St. Petersburg area since she was a child. “I’ve been here since I was a kid and stayed because there's just so much to do,” says Hefte. “The tourism industry is also a big employer.” St. Pete Beach is just 6 miles away, which is a big draw for both lifelong residents and short-term tourists. “It’s a popular area with a lot of recreation and great weather,” says Hefte.

What to do in Disston Heights
While Disston Heights is not as art-focused as many of St. Petersburg’s newer neighborhoods, it is home to the Kerouac House. The residence at 5169 10th Ave. is where Jack Kerouac, the famed Beat Generation writer and “On the Road” author lived from 1967 until he died in 1969. Though not technically a museum because of its location in a residential neighborhood, the house remains a gathering space for community activities such as poetry readings, lectures and seminars with a mission to enrich St. Petersburg’s culture. Tours, private events and even overnight stays are also available.
Downtown St. Petersburg is a very popular area, where people shop at Sundial, a 3-story shopping mall, and watch Tampa Rays baseball games at Tropicana Field. Art enthusiasts can visit the many museums in the area, such as The Dali, an art gallery dedicated to the well-known artist, Salvador Dali.
