Fossil Park dates back to the 1920s
Fossil Park, in northern Saint Petersburg, offers a neighborhood park and nearby retail. The top section of Fossil Park has gridline roadways. However, the southern streets form a large circular layout with surrounding communities. This unique detail dates back to Fossil Park's development in the 1920s. Washington D.C.'s famous circles inspired the design. Growth slowed in the 1930s, but the U.S. post-war housing boom brought more development to the area, including a popular park, also called Fossil Park. "The biggest thing is the park itself," says James W. Longstreth Jr., Realtor and co-owner of Your Neighborhood Realty Association with over 20 years of experience. "You'll always find people playing ball." The park grounds host a youth athletics league that has been a part of the community since the 1950s. The outdoor space "has a lot of amenities that older, more traditional neighborhoods just don't have," Longstreth says. The area is bordered by two busy roadways that lead to retail and downtown.

Local athletics and art at Fossil Park Sports Complex
The popular greenspace, Fossil Park, sits on the neighborhood's western side. Residents fill the bleachers to watch their kids play in the Fossil Park's Youth Baseball and Softball Leagues. Longstreth says that locals also rent the shelters and baseball fields for gatherings. Fossil Park's Sports Complex has a seasonal pool, and the tennis and basketball courts are available throughout the year. The Willis S. Johns Recreation Center, also on the park grounds, provides after-school programs and clubs for children. The center displays imprints of shark teeth, plants and other fossils on a Fossil Wall. North Community Library, which sits next to the recreational space, offers weekly exercise groups and a film appreciation club.

Ranch-style and split-level homes in Fossil Park's unique street layout
"Fossil Park streets are kind of like spokes on a wheel at the head of this grid system. It's a funny little detail about the neighborhood," Longstreth says. The area has mostly 20th-century homes showing a mix of bungalows, split-levels and ranch-styles. Houses have front yards and driveways, but many opt for street parking. Around half of all residents rent their homes, while the remainder are homeowners. Fossil Park's housing also includes apartment complexes and condos. Condominium prices range from $60,000 to $175,000. Typically, single-family houses range between $250,000 and $615,000, depending on the size and level of renovation.
Traditional, split-level homes are uncommon finds in the Fossil Park area.
