St. Petersburg community with suburban feel near big-city amenities and the beach

St. Petersburg’s Harris Park offers a mix of suburban tranquility and urban convenience. The primarily residential community is 4 miles from the Tampa Bay coastline and downtown, 9 miles from St. Pete Beach and is surrounded by shopping and dining. “It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood; you get the suburban feel without being far from everything,” says Jessica Salmond, President of the Harris Park Neighborhood Association. “There are plenty of things to do within a 10-minute drive. You can easily get to Tampa or downtown, but you have a full-size house with a full-size yard and neighbors you’ll see and wave to.” Salmond has lived in Harris Park for six years and has been the association president for the last three. She and her husband moved from Fort Myers in 2018, and for them, it was all about convenience and environmental factors. “The biggest thing for me is that most houses are not in a flood zone; that’s a big deal here,” she says. “We’re at one of the higher points in Pinellas County. My husband also commutes to Tampa for work, and the neighborhood is close to 275, so that was a nice feature for us.”

Bungalows and ramblers under $600,000

Niche ranked Harris Park as the third-best neighborhood with the lowest cost of living in the city and the 24th-best neighborhood in St. Petersburg to buy a house. “When we moved in, it was a little bit older, but a lot of younger families have moved in the last several years,” Salmond says. “You don’t have to worry about traffic, parking or crime. It’s very dog-friendly, and for the most part, everybody is friendly.” It’s quiet, tree-lined streets are filled with bungalows and ranch-style homes with some modern construction sprinkled in. Most homes were built in the early 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s for a two-bedroom over 900 square feet to the low-$600,000s for a four-bedroom over 1,900 square feet. Modern builds start around $600,000 and can cost over $850,000. “There’s been a lot of new construction in the last four or five years,” says Salmond. Some homes have rear garage parking or front-facing multi-car garages. Most houses have covered front porches, fenced-in yards and spacious driveways. A large pond with towering oaks and palms sits at the center of Harris Park, providing a private, tranquil feel to the community and a place where residents walk their dogs. Lot sizes are typically around 5,000 square feet but can span up to a quarter acre. “Most of the yards are a little bigger than the cramped neighborhoods toward downtown,” says Salmond. “We have dogs and wanted plenty of space for them. The new builders are building lot line to lot line, so newer homes don’t have as much space.” Residents are within walking distance of Kiwanis Park.

A favorite neighborhood watering hole and less than 2 miles from diverse shopping and dining

While most shopping and dining options sit along Interstate 275 to the west of the neighborhood and the 4th Street Corridor to the east, there is a favorite local watering hole within Harris Park. Stone Soup Cafe & Pub has a cozy atmosphere with soups and sandwiches that pair perfectly with craft beer and cocktails. “It’s the neighborhood hub, and it’s super popular for lunch,” Salmond says. “It’s family-friendly, but they have a bar as well.” The busy commercial corridor along 4th Street is less than 2 miles east of the neighborhood. Publix anchors the 4th Street Station, but Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Fresh Market are all along the other side of the street. Also on 4th Street is Fresh Kitchen, serving organic bowls and cold-pressed juices. El Cap Restaurant is another local favorite, known for its piled-high hamburgers, shoestring fries and sandwiches. There are also a variety of shopping and dining options along Dr. MLK Jr. Street, south of the community. “We have a brewery that’s a mile away or a bike ride away called Golden Isles,” Salmond says. Downtown St. Petersburg is 4 miles south for more shopping and dining options.

Surrounded by parks, St. Pete's Pier and the beach

The neighborhood’s Kiwanis Park has a basketball court, plenty of green space for a picnic and a shaded, fenced-in playground. “A lot of families come here; it has an outdoor gym and shelters to rent,” Salmond says. The 400-acre Sawgrass Lake Park is 3 miles north and has one of the largest maple swamps on the Gulf Coast. It’s a popular spot for hiking along its nature trail, bird watching and viewing other wildlife atop its observation tower. The 52-acre Crescent Lake Park is less than 3 miles south, and its lake, shaded with banyan trees, is a popular spot for picnicking. The park also has a playground, a dog park and the Huggins-Stengel Sports Complex, which has pickleball and tennis courts. Roberts Recreation Center is 1 mile away or a 5-minute bike ride and has basketball leagues, pottery and dance classes and before- and after-school programming for youth. St. Pete’s Pier and its 26 acres of waterfront parks and activities sit less than 5 miles east of Harris Park. The area has a marina, boat ramps, tons of spots for fishing and miles of coastal outdoor recreation.

A tight-knit neighborhood association

Harris Park Neighborhood Association is a small but mighty group that keeps the community involved and tight-knit. “We’re growing and seeking membership, but it's completely voluntary,” she says. “We’re trying to grow the community and get people engaged.” The group has regular meetings and an annual fall festival each November. “We have games and prizes the kids can win,” Salmond says. “It’s a free event at Kiwanis Park.”

Four miles from downtown St. Pete

Interstate 275 hugs the neighborhood’s western edge, connecting to Highway 93, which provides easy access to the rest of the region. Downtown St. Petersburg is 4 miles away, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is 10 miles away, and Tampa is a 20-mile drive. Public transportation is convenient via Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, with bus stops along 38th Avenue and 16th Street. St. Anthony’s Hospital is 3 miles south.
