Secluded island living near downtown St. Petersburg
Venice, Italy—a city composed of multiple small islands—is renowned for its intricate canal system, used as its primary transportation system. Eastern St. Petersburg’s Venetian Isles shares those same qualities, except it sits on the Tampa Bay. Five miles from downtown, the primarily residential community was developed in 1968 and consists of several man-made interconnected islands divided by canals and attached to the mainland by two bridges. Its unique shape gives all residents waterfront views and direct access to the bay, and recreation here is overflowing. “Venetian Isles is a prime location in St. Pete,” says Jim Henning, a Realtor for Compass Florida who has been serving the area for 15 years. “Anybody who appreciates the Florida lifestyle will love Venetian Isles. It has privacy, water access and natural beauty.” Despite its secluded island feel, Venetian Isles is 5 miles from downtown and less than 3 miles from a vibrant commercial corridor, providing convenience to shopping, dining and entertainment.
A boating and fishing community surrounded by parks and nature preserves
Boating and deep-sea fishing are popular in the neighborhood, which sits on the western shores of Old Tampa Bay and Bayou Grande. Many residents set sail directly from their homes' private docks. Shore Acres Mini Park is less than a mile west of the neighborhood and has a playground and picnic space around a lake. Denver Park is less than 2 miles west and provides a ballfield, six pickleball courts and a basketball court. Northeast Park is 3 miles northwest and has three lit baseball fields, but it’s home to two city-owned golf courses. Mangrove Bay is a public 18-hole course spread across 180 acres, and Cypress Links Golf Course is a public 9-hole course with a pro shop and driving range. The 3,000-acre Weedon Island Preserve is 7 miles east. Surrounded by the bay waters, the wildlife and mangrove forest preserve has 5 miles of nature trails, a fishing pier and a 45-foot observation tower. The preserve also has a 4-mile boating loop called the South Paddling Trail with access points along the bay. The neighborhood’s Westward Fishing Charters has multiple options for anglers, including both inshore and tarpon-specific trips. St. Pete’s Pier is less than 5 miles south, offering 26 acres of waterfront parks, boat ramps and various outdoor recreation.

Mediterranean mansions on the water
Niche ranks Venetian Isles as the fifth-best neighborhood in St. Petersburg to buy a house and the seventh-best neighborhood in the city. The palm-lined deed-restricted community is filled with over 500 ranch-style homes, Spanish and Mediterranean-inspired houses and modern builds. The unique shape of the neighborhood, with deep-water canals winding in between each man-made island, allows all residents to have a waterfront home. Most homes were built in the early 1970s and range from the low-$400,000s for a three-bedroom more than 1,900 square feet to over $2 million for a four-bedroom property more than 3,000 square feet. There are also some newly built modern homes priced from around $5 million to over $9 million for a custom-built six-bedroom estate. “One of the things about the neighborhood that you don’t typically find in other places is the range of prices,” says Henning. “We see first-time homebuyers up through second-home owners who want to buy here because of the range of prices and the amenities.” Most homes have multi-car garages, spacious brick-lined driveways, backyard in-ground pools, and almost all residents have boat docks. Residents also enjoy large lot sizes, with the average around 10,000 square feet but most stretching over a quarter acre. Condos are also available in the Lake Overlook subdivision, ranging from the high-$100,000s for a one-bedroom to the low-$200,000s for a two-bedroom more than 1,000 square feet. The condo complex offers a community pool, clubhouse and fishing pier. All residents have direct access to the bay and are within walking distance of Shore Acres Mini Park. The neighborhood is also in a no-flood zone because it’s elevated 7 feet above the natural shoreline.
