Housing and transportation options between Peabody and Salem
Sitting right between Peabody and Salem, Gallows Hill is a suburb with convenient access to shopping, dining and recreation. Over 90% of the community is composed of housing, with Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods dating back as far as the 1800s lining the shaded sidewalks as both single-family and multiunit homes. These houses are a short trip away from nearby parks and historic locations, with downtown retail in both Peabody and Salem about a mile from the front door. “Lots of people choose the area for its commuting and transportation access,” says Julie Andrews, an agent with Keller Williams Evolution who has served the community for over 11 years. “It's really easy to both get to downtown Salem, as well as get out of the city by the nearby roads.”
Colonials and Cape Cods around Gallows Hill
Homes in Gallows Hill take on much more of a suburban feel just a short walk from downtown Salem. Here, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod-inspired homes sit closer to the street to maximize the amount of green space in the tightly packed neighborhood. “It’s a pretty densely populated area,” Andrews says. “Lots of the houses are closer together than other suburban parts of the city.” Homes were commonly constructed between the 1850s and the 1950s, with some residences being two-family houses or townhomes, creating a dynamic feel for the neighborhood with a range of options. Home prices range between $400,00 and $750,000.
Playsets, fields and the Ryan Brennan Memorial Skate Park
Gallows Hill Park is the largest green space in the community, and a playset, two baseball diamonds and a basketball court are scattered around the park, where skateboarders of all ages can also practice their tricks on the grind rails and bowls at Ryan Brennan Memorial Skate Park. Hidden behind a layer of trees and local homes, Splaine Park features a baseball diamond and a basketball court next to a colorful playset that includes a slide built into the hilly terrain at the edges of the park.
Well-regarded music programs at Salem Public Schools
Witchcraft Heights Elementary School receives a C rating on Niche, as does Collins Middle School. The B-minus-rated Salem High School is well-known for its music programs. Its band has performed at national events like the Rose Bowl. Also in the area, the Saltonstall School is a kindergarten through eighth-grade option with a C-plus rating.
Local Salem diners and cideries
Despite Gallows Hill’s suburban nature, dining and shopping are nearby, with Black Cat Diner being one of the closer restaurants. This small streetcar diner is often filled with the sounds of the grill, and it offers breakfast and lunch specials. For a place to stop by after work, the neighborhood is also close to Far From the Tree, a cidery with a tasting room serving up selections ranging from their farmstead cider to a cinnamon candy apple cider. For daily necessities, there's a Stop & Shop nearby, or the Hawthorne Square shopping center is less than 2 miles south, with stores such as Target and Market Basket.
Major Salem roads and quiet sidewalks
Highland Avenue, part of State Route 107, is the closest major road to the neighborhood, offering routes to other coastal Massachusetts cities like Lynn and Revere. For commutes to Boston, Yankee Division Highway is less than 3 miles to the west and connects with U.S. Route 1, while public transportation is available at the Salem commuter rail station a mile away. Daily steps and local trips are also easily walkable, with almost every street having sidewalks to walk or bike on. Salem Hospital is just south of the community, and Boston Logan International Airport is 18 miles away in the same direction.
The Halloween Happenings Grand Parade and other events in Salem
With Gallows Hill less than 2 miles from the heart of downtown Salem, residents are never too far from annual events. Salem's largest gathering is the Halloween Happenings Grand Parade, where thousands of residents and visitors alike dress up and watch the floats and performances from local businesses and organizations, with plenty of candy and photo opportunities for all. In winter, the community comes together again for Santa’s arrival at the historic Hawthorne Hotel before he heads to Lappin Park and lights the city’s Christmas tree.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
