Affordable homes near outdoor recreation

Roughly 10 miles northwest of downtown Salt Lake City, the rural suburb of Westpointe was once an agricultural community but is now a growing neighborhood that draws folks looking for “affordable homes on larger lots with Oquirrh Mountain range views,” says Jenny Pace, a Broker for Greystone Real Estate with over 20 years’ experience. Newly remodeled split-level and modern ranch-style homes sell quickly here, and many Westpointe residents work at the Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base or Salt Lake City International Airport, both of which are within 6 miles. "Residents often hear fuel tankers and planes taking off throughout the day,” says Pace. “Most get used to it pretty fast.” Kids can attend above-average Salt Lake district schools like West High, and area parks offer playgrounds and bike tracks. Locally owned restaurants and shops are 9 miles away, and residents have easy access to interstates, local bus routes and bike lanes.

Homes from the ‘80s and early 2000s

Wide streets offer up to four-bedroom newly remodeled split-level and modern ranch-style homes built between the late 1980s and early 2000s and set on up to half-acre lots; prices average $454,000. These homes feature two-car garages with driveways wide enough for up to three cars; residents also park their cars on the street. Brick and vinyl siding is common, as are iron or painted-white wooden railings beside entryway steps. Small front and back yards are enclosed by chain-link and wooden lock board fences; front yards have room for flower gardens, and residents walk or bike along clean sidewalks under shade of mature elm and oak trees.

Youth scholarship competition

Kids may attend Salt Lake district schools like North Star and Northwest Middle, which respectively earn a C-plus and a C from Niche. At A-rated West High, students can work with the athletic department trainers to prepare for the physicality of NCAA athletics or compete to win college scholarships from the U.S. Senate Youth Program.

Tennis and motocross tracks

Roughly 5 miles east, residents can play tennis, basketball or volleyball at the 24-acre Westpointe Park. Families walk their dogs along the 1-mile paved path, kids can climb across spider-web-like nets on the playground and celebrate their birthday inside the covered pavilion. Set along Rose Park Lane, locals ride their motocross bikes on dirt-packed tracks at the Jordan River Off-Highway Vehicle State Park; beginners can learn how to lean into turns and jump ramps, while more experienced riders practice for races. The park also offers a track for all-terrain vehicles like 4-wheelers and multiple-passenger utility task vehicles.

Panini sandwiches and Utah burgers

Nine miles southwest along North Wright Brothers Drive, Roberts Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options; residents can order a panini sandwich with ham, bacon or sausage with cheese or beef tenderloin with glazed onions. The southern end of Westpointe offers Apollo Burger, where locals can enjoy a Utah burger with smoked pastrami and bacon while watching water cascade down a glass-enclosed wall. Residents can grab groceries at the neighborhood Smith’s and head 11 miles east to City Creek Center for department stores like Macy’s.

Interstates, rails and bike lanes

Residents and commuters can use their cars, Utah Transit Authority buses or the TRAX light rail system to get around; bike lanes run parallel to Interstate 215 and U.S. Route 68. Locals can hop on nearby Interstate 15 to get to downtown Salt Lake City. St. Mark’s Hospital is a 10-mile trip, and the Salt Lake City International Airport is roughly 6 miles west.
