City proximity and old-world charm

Yalecrest has the feel of both an urban area and a suburb. Its roads are wider and lawns are larger than other city neighborhoods, but it’s also more walkable than nearby suburban areas. People know they’ve come across the community when they see the tall, black “Welcome to Yalecrest” historic markers, lettered in gold writing. Named as a National Historic District on The National Register of Historic Places in 2007, the neighborhood has an old-world charm. “Yalecrest reminds me of the Georgetown, D.C. neighborhood, where there are these big, beautiful trees and the homes are spaced far away from the road,” says Keni Nelson, a Realtor with Homeworks Property Lab who’s lived in the area for a decade. It's an established area with walkable, shaded sidewalks, with street numbers carved into the curbs in front of homes. “It’s a quieter area, where you’ll see people wearing sweaters wrapped around their shoulders,” Nelson says. “But it’s not cookie cutter; it just has a ‘retired academic’ vibe.” The neighborhood sits between the Wasatch Mountains and downtown Salt Lake City, which is 4 miles away.

Tree-lined streets and historic homes

Homes in Yalecrest were built in the early 20th century, specifically between 1910 and 1930, says Leigh Ann Bernal, principal broker of Homeworks Property Lab Real Estate. Many homes are English Tudors, brick cottages and Spanish Colonials priced between $1 million and $3 million. Cape Cods and ranches with intricate details like high archways and steep ceilings are also common and priced between $800,000 and $1 million. Most properties have chimneys, and homes sit on limestone rock formations built in the mid-1800s. “Yalecrest is lovely,” says Paul Svendsen, a Salt Lake City native and ten-year Realtor with Windermere Real Estate. “It’s one of the most desirable neighborhoods, with long, curving streets and grand, old Sycamore trees hanging over them.” Compact, sloping front yards have enough room for shrub-lined walkways and decorative gardens. Short driveways lead to small, detached garages. Tall trees line the streets, towering over narrow sidewalks where residents walk their dogs.

Latte art at Logos Coffee

Yalecrest is close to 15th and 15th, which Svendsen says is “a great little commercial node.” Restaurants in the district include a bagel store, an enchilada place, a popular sandwich shop and Mazza, a well-known Mediterranean eatery serving appetizers like hummus and entrees like lentil soup and baba ghanoush. People grab coffee and quick breakfasts at Logos Coffee, a cozy spot where baristas make creative latte art. Emigration Café is a popular restaurant with outdoor patio seating located inside the neighborhood off 1300 South. The café is across the street from Harmons Emigration Market, the neighborhood’s main grocery store. For shopping, locals stop by Hip and Humble, a boutique a mile away from Yalecrest off Harvey Milk Boulevard. City Creek Center is a shopping mall located downtown with shops like Nordstrom and H&M.

Bonneville Elementary School and private schools like Rowland Hall

The Salt Lake School District serves children in Yalecrest. They can begin their education at Bonneville Elementary School, which receives an A from Niche. Kids continue at Clayton Middle School, which earns an A-minus on Niche and offers an Outdoor Recreation Club for rock climbing and kayaking. Students can graduate from B-rated East High School, which offers a career and technical training program. For higher education, the University of Utah is just 1 mile north. Rowland Hall is a well-regarded private school option near Yalecrest rated A-plus by Niche. This school, along with private institutions like The McGillis School, attracts young families to Yalecrest, Svendsen says. “Private schools are more of a big deal than public in the area,” he says. Neighborhood churches include The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the First Unitarian Universalist Church and Capital Church, which has sermons on Saturdays and Sundays.

Walking to Laird Park for picnics

Residents have quick access to the mountains for hiking, biking and skiing. Jack’s Peak Trailhead is a popular hiking spot 3 miles away. The nearby Bonneville Glen Walking Trail is attached to the Miller Bird Refuge and Nature Park, allowing locals to see wildlife like hummingbirds and squirrels. People enjoy views of the Salt Lake Valley while teeing off at the Bonneville Golf Course, a public 18-hole course about a mile away. Laird Park is a pocket park—within walking distance from many Yalecrest homes—with a small playground and shaded spots for sitting in the grass.

Watching movies in the park with neighbors

Yalecrest Neighborhood Council hosts a large, annual yard sale during the first week of September. The community puts on Movies in the Park at Laird Park annually in the fall, and an Easter Egg Hunt every year. The neighborhood is less than two miles from Rice-Eccles Stadium, a popular spot for university sporting events and local concerts. The stadium hosts Monster Jam, a monster truck rally that brings in spectators from all over in early January. Washington Square Park hosts the Utah Arts Festival, which happens every year during the last weekend of June in the downtown area and includes carnival caricatures, live music and more than 100 local art vendors. The city’s Pride parade also happens in the park every June, bringing in more than ten thousand attendees.

Riding down Sunnyside Avenue

The University of Utah and its medical campus are major employers for Yalecrest residents, who commute by car, bike or bus daily. Drivers hop on U.S. Route 89 to reach work. The Utah Transit Authority has two bright blue bus stops along South 1500 East, and Sunnyside Avenue, a main road that runs next to Yalecrest, has a wide bike lane for commuters. The CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital is less than 3 miles away, and Salt Lake City International Airport is 10 miles northwest.

Air quality issues in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City deals with air quality issues, especially in the summer and winter months. Because of the city’s elevation, polluted air tends to get trapped in the area, negatively affecting the ozone levels. The Utah Department of Air Quality constantly monitors the situation and works to reduce air pollution.

I feel like the racial diversity is fairly diverse. However, more than 50% of the population of Salt Lake is Christian or LDS. People in Salt Lake aren't exposed to other religious cultures as often. There is some diversity in political affiliations though.
