A tucked-away feeling but still close to amenities
County Club, also known as Bentwood Country Club Estates, or Bentwood, as locals call it, sits on the west side of San Angelo and is the only master-planned community in the city. Homes sit on neatly manicured lawns, many along the club’s rolling golf course. Residents tend to use golf carts to get around, whether it’s for recreation or to just grab lunch on a friend's back porch. While still accessible to the rest of San Angelo, Bentwood's location close to the edge of town makes residents feel like they’re in their own world. “It’s for folks who want something a little out of the way,” says John Biera, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Legacy who sells throughout San Angelo. "They're looking for that lifestyle. You go to the country club, and your friends are there; you open your back door and you're right on the green.”

Spacious New Traditional homes throughout the neighborhood
Bentwood’s streets are filled with spacious New Traditional homes, most of which have three or four bedrooms and were built in the 2000s. Some older homes are also available, built in the 1990s and 1980s and featuring upgrades that rival the amenities in the new builds. Prices range from $275,000 to about $600,000 for homes on the neighborhood's west side and from $600,000 to just over $1 million for homes on the golf course. Two-car garages are standard, and front yards are grassy and dotted with mature, shady trees. One townhouse complex is located near Knickerbocker Road, with a small selection of two- and three-bedroom units, typically ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the low $300,000s.
Recreation and fitness at the clubhouse, boating on Lake Nasworthy
While membership at the country club is not required to live in the neighborhood, many residents opt to join for its amenities, especially the 18-hole golf course. The club also offers lighted tennis and pickleball courts, an outdoor pool and neighborhood’s ponds filled with fish. There is also a fitness center with exercise classes, yoga and personal trainers. Nearby Lake Nasworthy is a popular destination for boating and fishing, and the San Angelo State Park, 8 miles away, offers deer and wild turkey hunting from October to March every year.
Public and private schools serve the neighborhood
The San Angelo Independent School District serves the neighborhood. Kids can start at the neighborhood’s own Lamar Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through fifth grade. The school earns a B-minus rating on Niche and offers a book exchange where families are encouraged to donate and borrow books. Glenn Middle School also rates a B-minus and serves sixth through eighth grade. Central High School serves ninth through 12th grade and rates a B-plus. Several nearby private, faith-based schools also serve the area, including San Angelo Christian Academy, located in the neighborhood and serving prekindergarten through 12th grade. Students who want to stay close to home after graduation can attend Angelo State University. The public university sits about 4 miles from the neighborhood and offers 50 undergraduate degrees and 31 graduate programs.

Dining at The Veranda Grill at the country club
Residents often head over to Sherwood Way for groceries and essentials at H-E-B, Target and Sam’s Club. The Sunset Mall is a popular indoor spot to spend an afternoon shopping, offering retailers like Ulta and Dillard’s. There are locally owned restaurants throughout the city, but many residents stay in the neighborhood and dine at the country club’s restaurant, The Veranda Grill. The restaurant offers casual American fare and weekly specials like the Pot of Golf buffet every Wednesday and fried fish lunch buffets every Friday.
Residents enjoy city fireworks on the golf course on July 4th
The neighborhood offers a way for residents to get together each Fourth of July. “There's a golf cart parade around the neighborhood, and then people park on the course and watch the fireworks,” says Dustin Hayden, Director of Membership and Communications at the country club. Residents also have easy access to events and activities throughout the city. The San Angelo Performing Arts Center has regular concerts by the San Angelo Symphony, and foodies from near and far gather every September for the Taste of San Angelo festival, which offers dishes and drinks from local restaurants and breweries. The largest event is the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, which spans nearly two weeks and offers multiple rodeos, live music and exhibits from the local 4H and Future Farmers of America chapters.
Transportation
Loop 306 runs along the neighborhood’s north side and connects to the rest of the city. The Concho Valley Transit bus line also has stops throughout the city for those taking public transportation. Interstate 20 is the closest major highway, located about 130 miles away, which locals can take to major cities throughout the state. San Angelo Regional Airport, about 5 miles from the neighborhood, offers daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
