Less than 2 miles from Downtown San Angelo, on the east side of the Concho River, sits the neighborhood of Fort Concho East. “The location attracts homebuyers,” says John Biera, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Legacy. “It’s close to the hospital and the Air Force base.” Goodfellow Air Force Base employs over 6,000 people in San Angelo. Janet Ridgway, a Realtor with ERA Newlin & Company Home and Land Group, says Shannon St. John’s Hospital is the “number one employer in town.” The neighborhood is also close to Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, a U.S. military base in the late 1800s that now offers tours and exhibits to visitors. The neighborhood’s affordability and its proximity to the Texas Bank Sports Complex, shopping and dining in downtown San Angelo add to its appeal.

From 1940s and 50s cottages and ranch-style homes to new construction

As prospective homebuyers drive down the wide streets of Fort Concho East, they’ll find charming cottages and ranch-style homes built in the 1940s and 50s. Many properties have shade-covered front lawns and driveways. These older homes have sold for between $70,000 and $220,000. Newer contemporary homes are becoming more popular, selling for between $230,000 and $430,000. While some roads have sidewalks, the neighborhood is more of a car-dependent community, backed up by its walkability score of 6 out of 100. As for crime, the CAP Index gave Fort Concho East a crime score of 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average.

Central High School’s longstanding drill team

Students in Fort Concho East are assigned to attend schools within the San Angelo Independent School District, which earns a B grade from Niche. Children may begin their education at San Jacinto Elementary, which receives a C. In sixth grade, they head to Lone Star Middle, which earns a B-minus. From there, students may attend B-plus-graded Central High School, known for its drill team called the “Tex-Anns,” the oldest established drill team in Texas. Cornerstone Christian School is a private school option nearby. It serves pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and earns an A grade from Niche.

14 miles from the San Angelo Regional Airport

Fort Concho East sits south of U.S. Route 277, which goes through the heart of San Angelo, and just west of Texas State Loop 206, which runs south and connects to U.S. Route 87. Public transportation can be found along Pulliam Street, where the Concho Valley Transit system has multiple stops. For flights, the San Angelo Regional Airport is a 14-mile drive. The commercial airport is served by Delta, United and American Airlines. Shannon St. John’s Hospital is just north of the neighborhood.

Youth sports at the Texas Bank Sports Complex

Residents who want to get outdoors have an array of recreational options. San Angelo City Park has a playground, ample green space and a walking trail. Texas Bank Sports Complex has baseball and softball fields and a playground. The complex is commonly used for youth sports leagues, including Little League baseball and softball. Bell Park is home to tennis and basketball courts and a baseball field just north of the neighborhood. Golfers can get in a round at Quicksand Golf Course, an 18-hole public facility.

Shopping and dining in Downtown San Angelo

Fort Concho East is less than 2 miles east of Downtown San Angelo, where residents can eat, drink and shop. Twisted Root Burger Co. serves burgers and shakes, as well as cocktails and beers. Fuentes Café Downtown offers American and Mexican cuisine, along with cocktails. For dessert, customers are known to order the cheesecake. Miss Hattie’s Restaurant and Cathouse Lounge serves steak and seafood. The building it is in is one of the oldest permanent structures in San Angelo, built in the 1880s. Morning Jay is one of the many small shops downtown, selling antiques. Food King is in the neighborhood for groceries and everyday essentials.

Christmas at Old Fort Concho

Residents of Fort Concho East look forward to Christmas at Old Fort Concho, held every year on the first weekend in December. Inside many of the fort’s structures are merchants and artisans, along with a food court. Those who want to compete can enter the event’s cookie decorating or gingerbread house contests.

Near Fort Concho National Historic Landmark

Just over the Concho River is the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, which was a U.S. military base in the late 1800s. The fort offers both guided and self-guided tours of the landmark. The base is also a popular spot for local students to go on field trips.
