The uncommon is common in this Bexar County neighborhood

It might sound hard to believe, but seeing horses ridden down local streets isn’t uncommon in Alamo Farmsteads. Located 15 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, the suburban neighborhood combines the best of rural and city lifestyles. Lots tend to be larger here, thanks to the area’s agricultural background. That’s also where it gets its name. Construction boomed in the 1980s as the city expanded, and today, the quaint and quiet area is known for outdoor recreation. In fact, the Leon Creek Greenway runs along Alamo Farmsteads’ western edge, giving neighborhood residents easy access to the 21-mile pathway.

1980s constructions on large acreage lots

Townhouses, apartments and detached single-family houses fill the gently curving streets of Alamo Farmsteads. The ranch- and national-style dwellings mingle with more contemporary new construction, and there are even a few small farms in the neighborhood. Trees are clustered around houses and spread along the roadways, which makes using the plentiful sidewalks more pleasant in the summer months. The area also has more owners than renters, although the rates are nearly even, with 60% of people owning their homes while 40% rent. Houses are selling for a median price of $290,000 after 47 days on the market, slightly longer than the national average of 42 days. Prices in Alamo Farmsteads range from $220,000 for a two-bedroom townhouse to $640,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style house on one-half acre.

Churros, naan and a selection of stores

At the neighborhood’s edge, Babcock Square Shopping Mall is home to eateries like Tikka Island Indian Street Food and Honchos -The House of Churros. The churro food truck has become a local landmark, thanks to its signature spiced caramel sauce, and there’s an H-E-B grocery store just a few blocks away. The Shops at Bandera Pointe lie five miles northwest of Alamo Farmsteads and contain large retailers like Target, Kohl’s and TJ Maxx, alongside multiple fast-casual and quick-service restaurants.

Highly ranked San Antonio schools

Students in northern San Antonio can attend schools overseen by the highly ranked Northside Independent School District, and Thornton Elementary, Rudder Middle and Marshall High Schools serve the Alamo Farmsteads neighborhood. Thornton Elementary and Rudder Middle have B-minus rankings, while Marshall High has a B. The elementary school educates prekindergarten through fifth grade and is known for its STEM-focused learning. Rudder Middle has career and technical education programs to help learners explore potential career paths. At the same time, Marshall High provides dual enrollment courses in conjunction with Northwest Vista College and St. Philip’s College.

Greenways and fairways in Alamo City

Easily accessible from Leon Vista Park, the Leon Creek Greenway runs 21 miles through multiple neighborhoods on the northwest side of San Antonio, including Alamo Farmsteads. It’s part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System, a network of more than 100 miles of multi-use trails around the city. Huebner Creek Park is an open green space on Whitby Road that is perfect for a quiet walk or picnic. The Mac Wylie Golf Center’s driving range is found in the neighborhood’s northwest corner. The state-of-the-art facility rests on 14 acres and features putting and chipping greens and a practice area.

Getting around by bus or car

“It’s close to the medical center, the area’s largest university and several other large employment centers. There’s a mix of young professionals and more established workers, and it’s centrally located to numerous shopping malls,” says Chris Thompson, Managing Broker at Haven with almost 15 years of experience. Many Alamo Farmsteads residents commute between 15 and 30 minutes one-way each day, with 71% driving themselves, 10% carpooling and almost 6% using public transit options. No matter which they choose, they’ll be traveling over easily accessible roads like Interstates 10 and 410, West Loop 1604 North and Bandera Road. Bus stops for routes 604 and 609 are regularly spaced in and around the neighborhood, although not all have benches or shelters. For those journeying even farther, Alamo Farmsteads is 13 miles from the San Antonio International Airport.

The oldest Sikh complex in San Antonio

Located on Hollyhock Road, the Sikh Center of San Antonio is the oldest Sikh house of worship, or Gurdwara, in the city. Centrally located in South Texas, the Gurdwara serves a large community of Sikhs throughout the state. The center is open to the public throughout the week, although formal services are held on Sunday mornings.

Environmental factors and crime

The neighborhood’s crime risk is in line with the national average, and the most significant natural disaster risk is from extreme wind damage, although the likelihood of that is low. Soaring temperatures can be a fact of life in Texas during the summer months, and the heat index should be checked when working or playing outside here on sunny days.
