Centuries-old San Antonio community brimming with culture
Gardendale is less than 3 miles from the heart of San Antonio, but this small, mostly residential community is often forgotten in favor of its flashier neighbors. Visitors might come by to see the century-old churches or get a plate of authentic Mexican barbeque, while locals settle in among the colorful houses and numerous city parks. “I’ve always felt most at home and safest on the West Side,” says Stephen Garza-Guzman, a West San Antonio native and Executive Director of local nonprofit Say Si. “Growing up, we talked to our neighbors and cared for each other and supported each other.” Gardendale has a CAP Index Crime Score of 7, above the national average score of 4. The area also has high CAP Index Crime Scores in some violent crime categories, including a 9 for robbery. San Antonio has seen an overall decrease in violent crime since 2022 when the city police department put more resources into focused deterrence efforts.

Gardendale homes are small in size and price point
Most of the neighborhood’s single-family homes were built between the 1920s and 1940s, and these older properties are typically under 1,000 square feet. These brightly painted ranch-style homes and Craftsmen cottages stand out against the small, fenced-in yards and thick, mature tree cover of the neighborhood, which are often filled with community events or neighborly gatherings. “Living in the area to me has always been rich in community,” says Jorge Gamboa, a Gardendale resident and local filmmaker and artist. “Every Easter, Christmas, and Super Bowl Sunday, you see family gatherings and cookouts all around the neighborhood.” The price point for Gardendale ranges from $150,000 to $300,000. This is lower on average than other neighborhoods close to downtown San Antonio, such as the popular Tobin Hill area, where homes range from $400,000 to $800,000.

The shrines and relics of Little Flower Basilica
Locals will not have to travel far for authentic Mexican food. Of the area’s many tacquerias and paleterias, Wicho’s Mexican Deli on Zarzamora Street is a favorite, both for its bright storefront and its signature burgers and cups of elote. Pop’s Barboca on Ruiz Street only opens on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but the Mexican barbeque and tamales are worth the week-long wait. Gardendale is also located just a few blocks from two H-E-B locations on Rosillo Street and Culebra Road.
Gardendale is dotted with multiple Catholic and Baptist churches, many of which hold services in Spanish. The historic Little Flower Basilica on Zarzamora Street is perhaps the best-known house of worship in the area. The church, which was built during the Great Depression, hosts monthly public heritage tours for visitors interested in seeing the building’s intricate shrines and relic collections.
