Fort Sam Houston, the heart of Government Hill.
History on the hill
Just south of Fort Sam Houston, Government Hill is a neighborhood steeped in history. This area is a mix of commercial and residential properties, with plenty for residents to explore. Government Hill was first developed during San Antonio's Gilded Age, from the 1890s to the 1930s. As Fort Sam Houston grew, the neighborhood continued to develop throughout the first half of the 20th century. With the construction of Interstate 35 in the 1950s, the neighborhood was split in half and began to decline, but it has started to see growth again in recent years. The neighborhood is just across U.S. Route 281 from Pearl, a historic brewery complex that is now home to restaurants, shops and a wine bar. It's also just across I-35 from the heart of San Antonio.

Despite recent development around Government Hill, the area has kept its historic charm. You can find pieces of the city's past in local restaurants that have been around for 100 years, such as San Antonio Pig Stand. Laying claim to being America's first drive-in restaurant, it serves up classic diner food and its famous pig sandwich. Earl Abel's has been serving the community since 1933 and is consistently voted as the best fried chicken in San Antonio. Two large estates still stand as reminders of the historic elegance of Government Hill. The Bullis House Inn was built in 1909 for Gen. John Lapham Bullis, and it operates today as a bed-and-breakfast. Lambermont was built in 1894 for prominent lawyer Edwin Terrell and his family.
