Enjoy scenic country roads and new construction in Heritage South, a sprawling, predominantly rural neighborhood with a cluster of homes at its northernmost tip and the bulk of its amenities spread along the surrounding major roadways. “Most of it has a very country feel but where they’ve started developing is really coming along,” says Carlos Lizama, a local Realtor with Bray Real Estate. “You’ve got sections with established homes and people who have been living there for all their lives and you’ve got these new builds that just started popping up around 2021. They’re fixing up the roads and everything so I think it’s really coming together to be a good neighborhood.”

Home options include everything from rural farms and ranch-style homes to traditional two-story homes. Prices range from $235,000 to $575,000. Square footage can be anywhere from 1,200 to 2,700 and lot sizes average at about 40,000 square feet. Two-car garages, small front porches and spacious windows are common, with additional design features like sharply-peaked roofs and archways adding character.

Students in Heritage South can attend Freedom Elementary School, which has about 500 students with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. Julius L. Matthey Middle School offers special electives to its 8th-grade students that include News and Video, Agriculture, Concepts of Engineering and Technology among others. Southside High School is another option that was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. The high school also has a strong golf team and marching band.

Stretch your legs at Medina River Natural Area, a great escape from the city with 7 miles of trails perfect for walking, cycling and viewing wildlife. This 511-acre waterfront park hugs the Medina River and visitors can enjoy educational experiences that offer insight into the El Camino Real wagon trail. Park amenities include group camping areas and covered pavilions as well.

If you’re craving some authentic Mexican food, Tacos El Forastero is a local food truck where residents can’t get enough of the great prices and classic dishes like breakfast tacos and beef tostada. Pure Country Smokin Barbecue is known for having some of the best barbecue in town served up in casual outdoor digs. Pair your barbecue or jalapeño sausage with potato salad and coleslaw. If you’d like to kick back with a drink while listening to some live music, R&J Music Pavilion is open every weekend and is a popular hangout spot.

Locals can satisfy their grocery needs at Dollar General. Or if you’re in a shopping mood, the local Flea-Mart is open every weekend, rain or shine, offering over 1,000 spaces and regularly scheduled live music.

Additional local amenities include the Somerset Independent School District Performing Arts Center, which is open to the public and hosts regularly scheduled events for the community to enjoy. The neighborhood is also home to the Texas A&M University-San Antonio, a public university that enrolls well over 7,000 students and is the first Texas A&M University System institution to be established in a major urban center. It is also the fastest-growing university in the system and the only A&M institution of higher learning in a metropolitan area.

Heritage South is conveniently located just about 10 miles from Downtown San Antonio and all the additional amenities it has to offer. The neighborhood also has easy access to multiple major roadways like Interstate 410 and Highway 281.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
